West Indies lose two wickets on rain-marred day
Barbados, June 29: With rain playing spoilsport at the Kensington Oval on Day 2 of the second Test, only 25.3 overs could be bowled and 68 runs scored for the loss of two wickets following an action-packed Day 1.
The first session only began after a 45-minute delay due to early morning showers. The conditions, however, suited the bowlers and the duo of Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar exploited them to the fullest. The moisture in the wicket was conducive to pace bowling and while Ishant Sharma troubled the batsmen with extra bounce, Praveen Kumar’s swing kept them on their toes. Resuming on an overnight total of 30 runs for the loss of three wickets, West Indies had a shaky start. Sharma first claimed night watchman Devendra Bishoo and a couple of deliveries later got the better of Ramnaresh Sarwan.
The wicket of Sarwan had the WI floundering at five wickets for 57 runs in the morning session. That left two new batsmen, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels, at the crease. Their unbroken partnership was worth 41 runs when rain interrupted the match post-lunch.
Just as the game was about to resume, rain sent the cricketers back without a ball being bowled. For most part rain, and later, bad light, affected the day’s play.
With Chanderpaul and Samuels at the crease, West Indies were on 98 runs for the loss of five wickets at stumps on the second day.
Brief Score (At the end of Day-2): India 1st Innings 201 all out in 68 overs (VVS Laxman 85, Suresh Raina 53, R Rampaul 3/38, D Bishoo 3/46, Fidel Edwards 3/56); West Indies 1st Innings 98/5 in 37.3 overs (S Chanderpaul 20*, M Samuels 21*, Ishant Sharma 3/31).
