Rayudu's effort goes to waste as hosts cruise to win
Mumbai, Feb 22: Mumbai beat Baroda by four wickets in their first match of the Inter State One-day league, at the Wankhede stadium. Chasing 184, Mumbai reached the target in 46 overs in the West Zone encounter.
Opener Sushant Marathe led the chase with a 95-ball 55 before nicking Murtuza Vohara to the wicketkeeper. Ajinkya Rahane was the first to depart after contributing just four runs to the chase followed by former skipper Wasim Jaffer who consumed 20 balls for a solitary run before being run out.
Next man in, Abhishek Nayar hit the only six of the match during his 38-run knock. He was out to an attempted reverse sweep off Bhargav Bhatt, caught at point by Kedar Devdhar. Ankit Chavan, who had earlier taken three wickets, was then run out for 14. With just 11 runs required to win, Iqbal Abdulla was out for 13, trying to take the aerial route. Surya Kumar Yadav, who had replaced Nayar at the crease, saw Mumbai through with an unbeaten 38 (50) with his captain (5*) at the other end.
Earlier, Ajit Agarkar’s side wrapped up the Baroda innings for 183 after opting to bowl first. Dhawal Kulkarni gave the hosts early breakthroughs with the wickets of Baroda openers Aditya Waghmode and Devdhar. However, Ambati Rayudu held up one end with a 106-ball 69 and was involved in two valuable partnerships worth 42 and 63 with Rakesh Solanki and Yusuf Pathan (30) respectively.
Solanki, who was dropped by Jaffer while he was batting on one, contributed 13 runs before scooping a catch to Surya off Kshemal Waingankar. Chavan then dealt two quick blows by disrupting Pathan’s woodwork, and claiming Baroda skipper Pinal Shah. Iqbal Abdulla too chipped in by removing Rayudu’s off-stump. A few balls later, a direct hit from Abhishek Nayar at cover claimed Gagandeeep Singh Natt; the score read 146 at that point. Chavan and Agarkar then polished off the tail with three balls to spare.
Brief Scores: Mumbai 186/6 in 46 overs (Sushant Marathe 55, Suryakumar Yadav 38*, Abhishek Nayar 38) beat Baroda 183/10 in 49.3 overs (Ambati Rayudu 69, Yusuf Pathan 30, Ankit Chavan 3/23) by four wickets
