Ravi Shastri feels Sreesanth has it in him to deliver straightaway
Nottingham, July 29: As the second Test of the four-match series gets underway at Trent Bridge, India will be looking to overcome their injury woes and make their enforced team changes work for them.
Ahead of the Test, expert Ravi Shastri spoke to www.bcci.tv about India’s chances in an exclusive interview.
Excerpts from the interaction:
Can India be expected to bounce back and win at Trent Bridge?
They have done it in the past; they have done it in Durban. But it is all a case of self belief now and a case of players being fit. If they get their best side on the park, which unfortunately will not be the case because Zaheer [Khan] is not fit, they will still need someone like an Ishant [Sharma] to step up who bowled really well in the first [Test]. if they are going to bounce back, they are going to bounce back in the first innings itself, like they did in Durban, were they bowled out England for under 250 [runs]; that will be their best chance for fighting back in the series. If that doesn’t happen, then I am afraid India will be playing catch-up right through the Test match. It looks like a bowling day; it’s overcast and cloudy and the bowl will swing.
Can Sreesanth be expected to deliver immediately?
Yes, he is an experienced player. It is not that he hasn’t played in England in the past. He is hitting the right length because he is a genuine swing bowler and if he gets it right, he has the ability to bowl really good deliveries and get good players out.
How differently should the Indian batsmen look to play the English pacers in this Test?
I think it is very important that they play their natural game. Do not allow them to dictate terms to them and once they get off to a start, they must keep the tempo going and they must convert those scores into big ones.
Will there be much pressure on Harbhajan Singh to perform in this Test match?
There will be pressure, but it’s unnecessary pressure, I believe. In England, in English conditions on a Day 1 track when you are opting to field first, if you win the toss, it is never easy. But he is a fighter, let’s not forget what he did in Durban; he was outplayed in the Test match at Centurion and he bounced back and took wickets in the next Test.
What should MS Dhoni look to do should he win the toss?
I think it will be interesting to see what he does; he might want to field first because of the overcast conditions but then again he has to be careful because if [England] get away and get a big score, then India will be under pressure.
