Need to start off well: Sammy
Summary

WI skipper Darren Sammy feels performing early in a series is key

Jamaica, June 16: West Indies skipper Darren Sammy was a happy man as the hosts ended the five-match ODI series against India on a winning note. He was particularly pleased at the batting effort of Darren Bravo and bowling performance of Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell.

Man-of-the-Match Andre Russell set up the victory for West Indies with a four-for that helped wrap up the Indian innings for 251 runs. The local lad finished with figures of 8.3 – 0 – 35 – 4 at an economy rate of 4.11, claiming the wickets of Parthiv Patel, Yusuf Pathan, Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma.

Looking forward to the three–match Test series beginning next week, a relaxed Sammy spoke to the media, while Andre Russell spoke about his bowling mantra.

Excerpts from the media-interaction:

Darren Sammy (Captain, West Indies)

On the match

Yes, credit to all the bowlers [for] the way they came back [into the game]. At one stage it looked like we would be chasing 300 runs but [Andre] Russell and [Kieron] Pollard and the guys really stuck in and it was tremendous to see how we pulled it back.

On Darren Bravo scoring runs at a different batting position

We all know what Bravo is capable of doing so it’s always good to put in a performance. We have been asking the batsmen to come good throughout the series and today they did it and we won.

On the decision to call back Ramnaresh Sarwan (retired hurt on 75) during the Powerplay

Yes, good to see it worked out. He was cramping up and [we] thought it would be more beneficial for the team with a new batter than [persisting with] him.

On coming back to win the last two games of the series, just like they did against Pakistan recently

I think we have to start off very well the next time around. It shows that even when we are on the back-foot, we still have the fighting spirit. If we could start off very early, it would be a plus for us.

On the forthcoming Test series against India

If you look at the Pakistan series, we won the last Test so we could take the momentum from there. We are prepared and hopefully we can put in a good performance.

Andre Russell (Fast bowler, West Indies)

On the series

I thank my team-mates; we have played very good cricket over the past two games. Losing the series [was disappointing] but [we’re happy to be] ending the series on a high. Even though we lost [the series], [we’ll] be positive. It was a good wicket to bowl on […] and [the result] has come out positive.

On bowling with a lot of aggression

I think one or two guys are not really comfortable with the short ball so you have to use it but not overuse it. […] Whenever you are doing it [bowling], put everything in it.
