IPL-winning captain MSD feels a good start was the key to CSK’s victory
Chennai, May 28: Chennai Super Kings defended the IPL title successfully under captain cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni, beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore comprehensively at home. Winning matters but winning in the right manner matters more, posited Dhoni in a post-match media interaction as he reflected upon CSK in IPL 2011. Excerpts from the interview: On CSK saving the best for last Well you can say so but it was a fabulous effort by all the guys. [Murali] Vijay batted very well, he gave us a good start along with [Michael] Hussey and they made sure that they went [on] till the 14th -15th over. So I think that really helped us. Whatever momentum we got in the first six overs, we were able to maintain that and that’s the reason why we were able to score something like 200-odd runs On the intensity of CSK’s batting, especially in the first 25 minutes I think the intent was there, what’s important is, [it] being the final, you don’t want to get desperate to win it. What you want to show is [the] intent that you are there to win it. And I think that’s what’s the batsmen did. I think the placement was really good. They challenged the fielders and they took very good singles because of that they were able to rotate strike and put pressure on the opposition bowlers. On not letting off the pressure with their bowling I think the first 10 overs were really good after that when we got four-five wickets, we slacked off a little bit. But I think the start was very good. [R] Ashwin again bowled really well. He has a big heart [that allows him to] toss the ball up even if there are just two fielders outside [the ring]. I think that’s one of the reasons why he gets more purchase compared to some of the other spinners. And he was equally well supported by some of the other bowlers. Albie [Morkel] bowled two to three overs in the first six [overs]. I think overall [it was a] very contributive performance by the bowlers. But what’s important is that we got off to a very good start. On picking the tougher win between IPL the 2010 and 2011 finals I think last year we were in a position [from where] we wouldn’t have been able to reach the playoffs, the semi-final. This year we were quite comfortable, but I think the big achievement for us is winning the fair play award and the trophy [together] because a lot of people think you have to play hard and then only you can win. We have shown that you can be sober; you can play within the limits and still win the trophy. On the prospect of pulling off a ‘double double’ of two straight IPL and CLT20 wins We [will] look to do that. Again, I won’t be over-confident, once we turn up in September-October, we’ll have to see the chances, what kind of a form we are in. Of course the conditions will be in our favour because we know Indian conditions quite well. At the same time I won’t say we will definitely win it, but we’ll give it our best and look to win it. On the crowd support and message for the fans To start off the Chennai crowd were brilliant throughout - they really supported us. That really helped, especially in the close games. If you see, quite a few games that we played in Chennai we won by 18 runs – 20 runs or 17 runs , so that really matters [that] they came for each and every game, even when we had qualified. I thank them for their support and overall I think it was a bit tough, because if you see the schedule, we were playing IPL right after the World Cup […] I think every Indian around the earth wanted us to win the World Cup so I think after the World Cup they were a bit relaxed. They were like, okay we will pick-up [on] the IPL after a while. Emotionally they were drained along with the cricketers. Later on it improved; there were good turn-outs on the field and eventually, everything went off well. On where he planned to spend a much-needed break Once you get a break from an ODI series, you don’t really get enough time to go on a holiday. In the last four months I have been in India but I haven’t visited home so the first six days I will go to Ranchi.
