Summary
Can India bounce back from the Test debacle with a T20 surprise?
The only T20 international between England and India coming after a one-sided Test series that England swept 4-0.
When
August 31, 2011. The game begins at 22:30 pm, IST.
Where
Old Trafford, Manchester. India have never played a T20 international at this venue. England have played only two matches at this venue one of which provided no result because of rain.
The Teams
Both teams look vastly different from the respective sides that competed in the Test series. The emphasis in both teams is clearly on youth with only five players between the two squads (Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Swann) being over 30.
India would have their confidence back with three successive warm-up victories. Virat Kohli has been particularly impressive with scores of 71 and 78 in two of those games. Parthiv Patel, more than likely to open the innings, has also looked good with a couple of good knocks against Sussex and Leicestershire.
With India preferring to play seven batsmen including MS Dhoni in the shorter formats of the game, R Ashwin should edge out Amit Mishra for the specialist spinner’s spot. In the pace department Dhoni could play it safe by opting for the more experienced trio of Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and RP Singh instead of giving one of the younger lads, R Vinay Kumar or Varun Aaron, a place in the side.
England, having picked a 13-man squad led by Stuart Broad, are expected to extend their unbeaten run in Tests to the limited overs’ formats well. Having trumped India with a barrage of short-pitched stuff in their previous T20 outing (ICC World Twenty20, June 2009), expect Broad, Tim Bresnan and Steve Finn to dish out more of the same to the young Indian batsmen in this game.
Trivia
RP Singh currently has 15 wickets against his name in T20 internationals. Should RP figure in India’s playing eleven against England, three more wickets will help him equal Harbhajan Singh's record of being the Indian bowler with the most wickets (18) in T20Is.
Kevin Pietersen has been rested for the ODI series against India. From that perspective, Pietersen has the opportunity to sign off on a high – he is only 22 runs short of becoming the first England batsman to aggregate 1,000 runs in T20Is.
