Summary
Depleted India hope to make a comeback at The Oval
What
The third One-Day International of the five-match series between England and India
When
September 9, 2011. The game begins at 17:30 pm, IST. The match is a day-night affair.
Where
Kennington Oval, London. The last game between the two sides at this venue was a thriller. Batting first, England put on a staggering 316 thanks to a feisty 107* from Owais Shah in 95 deliveries. However, India were up to the fight with some scintillating stroke-play from their top order batsmen (Sourav Ganguly 53 off 60, Sachin Tendulkar 94 off 81 and Gautam Gambhir 47 off 57). But when the game went down to the wire, with the visitors needing 10 off the last over with three wickets in hand, it was Robin Uthappa who saw the side through with two balls to spare.
The Teams
India find themselves in a situation similar to the one they faced leading up to that sensational win at the Oval in 2007. Back then India trailed the hosts 1-3 before successive victories at Leeds and the Oval helped keep the seven-match series alive. India are currently trailing the five-match series 0-1 after three games and will be desperate to register their first win of the tour.
England are comfortably placed, much like they were in the Test series against India. They were able to tide past the last minute injury to Eoin Morgan before the second ODI and yet record a comfortable win against the visitors while chasing a stiff target. Their middle-order does look a little vulnerable (Ravi Bopara, Ben Stokes, Samit Patel) but as long as Broad, James Anderson, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann lead their bowling attack, the hosts will always hold the edge against the relatively inexperienced Indian batting line-up.
Trivia
Having scored 94 runs from his previous two ODI outings, Ajinkya Rahane needs 55 runs to become the leading run-scorer for India after the first three matches. Navjot Sidhu currently holds the record with 148 runs.
James Anderson became just the second English bowler after Darren Gough to record 200 ODI wickets when he dismissed Parthiv Patel in the first ODI. Should Anderson play at The Oval, it will be the pacer’s 150th ODI; that would make him only the fourth England player after Paul Collingwood (197), Alec Stewart (170) and Darren Gough (159) to achieve this distinction.
