Summary
Can India register their first win of the tour at Lord's?
What
The fourth One-Day International of the five-match series between England and India
When
September 11, 2011. The game begins at 14:45 pm, IST.
Where
Lord’s, London. The first time India played an ODI game at this venue was only the 19th time an ODI match had been played between these two countries. Sunil Gavaskar scored a laborious 36 runs off an astonishing 174 deliveries in a game where India were asked to overhaul England’s mammoth score of 334. The last ODI match played by India at this venue doesn’t bring back pleasant memories for Indian fans either. It was here that India surrendered a keenly contested seven-match series (3-3 heading into the deciding game) to England tamely; the visitors lost by seven wickets after crumbling to 187 all out.
Between those two matches, however, Lord’s has undoubtedly been the scene of two of India’s greatest ODI triumphs. Kapil Dev and 10 other Indians beat the West Indies one balmy afternoon in June 1983 here to give India the mantle of ODI World Champions. 19 years later, in 2002, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif orchestrated a dramatic comeback to chase down England’s mammoth sore of 325 and give India a memorable NatWest series win.
The Teams
As the third ODI showed, England are far more beatable in the 50-over format than they were in the Test series. However, for India to beat the hosts, both their batting and bowling units need to function in unison. In the second ODI, their bowlers were unable to provide them with regular breakthroughs while at the Oval in the third ODI, it was their top order batsmen who failed them.
England might look to replace Jade Dernbach with Samit Patel heading into the fourth ODI. As effective as Dernabch was in the T20 outing against the visitors (Man-of-the-Match with figures of four for 22), he has looked rather ordinary in the three ODI games so far. The medium pacer has just two wickets at a rather expensive economy-rate of 6.83 RPO to show for his efforts. Patel’s inclusion ahead of Dernbach comes with the added bonus of strengthening England’s middle-order batting.
Trivia
Rahul Dravid is on the verge of equalling a dubious record before his ODI career comes to an end. Run out in the third ODI, Dravid has now been dismissed in that fashion 40 times in his ODI career. Only one batsman – Sri Lanka’s Marvan Atapattu – has been run out more often (41 times) in ODI history.
Having bagged his 200th ODI wicket and made his 150th ODI appearance, James Anderson achieved yet another landmark during the course of this series. With three wickets to his credit in the third ODI, Anderson has now taken 32 wickets in 23 games against India. This is the highest number of wickets for Anderson against any opponent in ODIs.
