Summary
India look to build on their good showing at Chester-le-Street
What
The second ODI of the five-match series between England and India. India are still looking for that elusive win on the tough tour.
When
September 6, 2011. The game begins at 18:30 pm, IST.
Where
The Rose Bowl, Southampton. The last time these two sides met here, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell struck centuries while James Anderson took four for 23 in a 10-over spell that resulted in a 104-run thrashing for India. Since that August 2007 outing, England have won two more ODI games at this venue while losing only once to Australia.
The Teams
The first ODI, abandoned due to rain, was turning out to be India’s best game of the tour against the hosts. Led by an impressive showing from Parthiv Patel (95), the batting clicked to put up a robust total. Praveen Kumar’s double-strike even gave India the upper hand before the weather played spoilsport.
However, all that is in the past. India have fresh injury woes with Rohit Sharma having been ruled out of the remainder of the series with a fractured right index finger and Sachin Tendulkar facing an inflammation of his right toe. Sharma’s replacement, Manoj Tiwary, had a rich run of form in the recently concluded Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, a best of 188 in a three-day match against New Zealand A being the highlight. But scores of 2 and 22 for India in the preceding ODI series in the West Indies cast doubts over Tiwary’s potential to perform at the highest level.
England’s four-pronged pace attack appeared largely ineffective on the belter of a track at Riverside Ground. Jade Dernbach, England’s hero in the T20 game against the visitors, was the worst of the lot having conceded 62 runs with only a solitary wicket to show for his nine overs. If Graeme Swann has recovered from the injury that kept him out of the first ODI, expect him to replace one of the pacers at Southampton.
Trivia
Rahul Dravid made headlines when he was picked for the ODI series leg of this tour. Dravid, 38 years and 237 days old as of today, is the second-oldest cricketer to have represented India in ODIs. Mohinder Amarnath made his last ODI appearance at 39 years and 36 days.
With Kevin Pietersen rested for the ODI series, Jonathan Trott, along with Ian Bell and Alastair Cook, shares additional batting responsibilities for England. Trott has shown that he is capable of doing the job given that he needs only 60 runs to become the leading run-scorer in ODIs in 2011. If he does achieve this distinction at Southampton, Trott will surpass Australia’s Shane Watson’s tally of 1,075 runs.
