Teams eye final flourish in one-off T20I
What The lone T20I between India and England When September 7, 2014 Where Edgbaston, Birmingham The Teams India After 24 long years, India sealed a bilateral ODI series win in England winning the five-match ODI series 3-1. After the Tests and ODIs wrapped up, it is time for one final outing in England. India now look to take the confidence from the ODI series win forward into the lone T20I on Sunday. If the ODI series is to be taken into consideration, India have plenty of positives to take. Shikhar Dhawan is back amongst the runs, Ajinkya Rahane and Suresh Raina have been consistent and Bhuvneshwar Kumar like the Test series has been effective in the ODIs as well. The T20I could be seen as a perfect platform to test the bench strength of the team. Sanju Samson and Karn Sharma are yet to get a game this summer in Indian colours and India might consider giving the duo a look in. Both Karn Sharma and Sanju Samson have been effective T20 players in the IPL and are coming of a good tour of Australia where they played for India A. India could also consider resting Bhuvneshwar Kumar who has had a long and tiring tour of England. England Led by Eoin Morgan in the absence of their T20 captain Stuart Broad, England would be looking to try out the new faces in the squad. For starters, they have included Jason Roy into the squad who was the top-scorer in the 2014 Natwest T20 Blast with 677 runs and a strike-rate of over 150. Roy has a reputation of being a big hitter and could make his debut in the one-off T20. England have also recalled Tim Bresnan, Ravi Bopara and James Taylor and it would be interesting to watch a fresh playing eleven for England at Edgbaston. The T20 squad for England looks exciting with some big hitters and innovative players in their ranks. They are up against a strong Indian side and they would have to be at the top of their game to defeat a young Indian side that enjoys playing this format of the game. Key Players India When you talk about utility players in the shortest format of the game, India would not look far ahead of Ravindra Jadeja. He developed a special kind of liking in the final ODI at Headingley scoring a stroke-filled 87 almost bringing back hopes of an Indian victory. He has been MS Dhoni’s key player in coloured clothing off-late and one can expect Jadeja to display his all-round skills in a format that he enjoys playing. An eccentric fielder, a utility bowler and a batsman who adds firepower in the lower order, Jadeja could be a deciding factor if he is not rested for the T20I. England Eoin Morgan’s exploits with the bat are well known and come Sunday, his captaincy skills will also be put to test. Morgan has been an effective batsman lower down the order in limited overs cricket and now he has the responsibility of leading a young side by example. How well he handles this young troop and makes an impact on the game will be worth a watch and England would want their captain to fire all guns blazing. Expect the reverse sweep and the odd shuffle in the crease that are synonymous to Morgan to take centre stage. Stat Overview
