Preview: India v WI – 4th ODI
Summary

Can the upbeat visitors level the series in Indore?

What

The fourth One-Day International of the five-match series between India and West Indies

When

December 8, 2011. The game begins at 14:30 pm, IST. The match is a day-night affair

Where

Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore. Runs are in the offing given that the only two ODIs played here have witnessed India ending up on the winning side with scores of 289 (batting second) and 292 (batting first). Those two matches alone have seen 10 batsmen reach half-centuries with Yuvraj Singh having smashed a 122-ball 118 in the last ODI played in November 2008.

The Teams

Virender Sehwag, Parthiv Patel and Gautam Gambhir have 115 runs between them to show for the nine innings they have played in this series. That, perhaps, is the best indicator of India’s top-order woes against a spirited West Indies unit. Ajinkya Rahane might just find himself in the playing eleven given the context. Additionally, India’s bowling at the death could do with some improvement; they conceded 99 runs off the last 14 overs at Vizag and 73 off the last five in Motera.

Sunil Narine, with figures of two for 34 from his 10 overs, was the visitors’ biggest gain from their win at Motera in the third ODI. With Kemar Roach and Ravi Rampaul showing the ability to unsettle the Indian batsmen with their pace, the visitors might have finally found the right bowling combination for the last two ODIs in this series. Most importantly, Darren Sammy needs to come good with his bowling for the visitors. The West Indies captain has bowled just 13.5 overs in this series while giving away 77 runs at the relatively expensive economy-rate of 5.77 for just a solitary wicket.

Trivia

  • The Indian spinners have conceded 4.22 runs per over in the last 10 overs in the series. The pacers have gone for 8.14 runs per over

  • Only one side has beaten India in a five-match bilateral series in India after losing the first two games – Pakistan in 2004-‘05
