Summary
Sammy’s boys look to finish tough tour on winning note
What
The fifth and final One-Day International of the five-match series between India and West Indies
When
December 11, 2011. The game begins at 14:30 pm, IST. The match is a day-night affair.
Where
M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai. Going by the evidence of the 2011 edition of Champions League Twenty20, the Chennai wicket is two-paced and generally allows for strokeplay at the start of the innings. It is also known to be a bat-first wicket.
The Teams
With India having wrapped up the series riding on Sehwag’s record innings in Indore, there is a good chance that the likes of Manoj Tiwary and Ajinkya Rahane will finally get a game at Chepauk. Varun Aaron’s absence due to a back injury might just open the doors for Irfan Pathan thanks to his all-round ability. Rahul Sharma, who impressed in his ODI debut at Indore, is expected to play the role of the second spinner alongside R Ashwin.
This is the visitors’ last opportunity to put on a solid batting display on the tour. Barring the Motera ODI, where their middle-order chipped in with decent scores, the West Indies batting has disappointed consistently in the ODI series. None of their batsmen has scored a hundred and only five have half-centuries (one from Ravi Rampaul at No. 10) to show for their efforts in the four ODIs played so far. The Indians, on the other hand, have two centuries and five half-centuries (three by Rohit Sharma alone), to their credit.
Trivia
The Indians used only eight overs of pace at Indore (with both Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun bowling four overs each) – a new low for Indian pacers. The previous record for the least overs by Indian pacers in a complete ODI innings was 11 – vs Kenya at Gwalior in 1998, with Venkatesh Prasad bowling six overs and Robin Singh only five as Kenya piled up 265 for five in 50 overs.
The West Indies’ lower-order has performed significantly better than their top-order in the ODI series. In the four games so far, West Indies’ average score at the fall of the fifth wicket is 125; the lower-order has added 127 runs to the total on an average.
