Spotlight on Indian batsmen after Napier shortcomings

What Second ODI of the five-match series between New Zealand and India When Wednesday, January 22, 2014, (14:00 local | 01:00 GMT | 06:30 IST) Where Seddon Park, Hamilton, New Zealand The Teams India India’s short-ball problems resurfaced in the first ODI as four of their top six batsmen got out miscuing the pull shot. But as MS Dhoni said, the solution to this problem is mastering the shot rather than taking it out of the repertoire. Duncan Fletcher has a task at his hand, that of fine-tuning the batsmen’s technique against the bouncer. Despite their 24-run loss in Napier, India are unlikely to make many changes in their XI. Dhoni made it very clear that a four-pronged pace attack is out of question. Hence, the only bowling change, if any, could be replacing Ishant Sharma (9-0-72-1) with either Ishwar Pandey or Varun Aaron. New Zealand Not much went wrong for the hosts in the Napier game. They batted well, particularly against the Indian spinners and lived up to their high standard in the field. The game, however, was changed by their two young fast bowlers, Mitchell McClenaghan and Corey Anderson. They used the bouncer well and got wickets at regular intervals. While the winning combination is unlikely to be fiddled with, the Kiwis will be forced to replace pacer, Adam Milne, who has been ruled out of the ODI series with a torn abdominal muscle. Key Players India The only formidable fight from India’s side in the first ODI came from Virat Kohli, who has been on a rather elongated run-spree. Of all the Indian batsmen, Virat looks most technically compact and temperamentally equipped to handle the Kiwi bowlers in their own backyard. He will be the prized wicket for the opposition after his fine century in Napier. New Zealand In Corey Anderson, New Zealand have unearthed the ultimate limited overs asset any captain would want – a pace-bowling and hard-hitting all-rounder. At No. 7, he blasted 68 off 40 balls in Napier, which proved decisive in the end. On the bowling front, he played the perfect foil to McClenaghan by scalping a couple of batsmen.
