Preview: SA v India - 2nd ODI
Summary

Will the Indian batting come good in their second outing against the hosts?

What

The second of the five One-Day Internationals between India and South Africa. The match is a Day/Night affair.

When

January 15, 2011. The game begins at 6 pm, IST.

Where

New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg. The wicket at the Wanderers is known to favour batting, with the Australians having scored as many as 359 runs in the 2003 ICC ODI World Cup final at this venue. It is also the place where South Afica, in March 2006, successfully chased down Australia's world-record total of 434 for four in an ODI.

The Teams

With a 135-run defeat haunting them from the first game, it is India that is under pressure. Also, if they lose another game, coming back from 0-2 down to win the five- match series would be a tough ask. A couple of things that need to go right for India then: firstly, their opening bowlers need to keep South Africa in check – in the last game, they conceded as many as 63 runs in the first 10 overs and had only a solitary wicket to show for their efforts. And secondly, Tendulkar needs to set the foundation when India bat.

South Africa are much better placed. They know what it takes to win at home. This may also be the game where they give either one of Imran Tahir or Faf du Plessis the opportunity to make a debut. However, with the all-pace attack having come good in the previous game, the temptation to retain the winning squad will be great.

The Toss and the Weather

Both should have an impact on this game. As is generally the case in South Africa, the team winning the toss will look to bat first if the game is being played under lights. India’s difficulty in dealing with the hosts’ pace attack in the previous game was testimony to this wisdom.

Rain threatens to disrupt the game, with heavy showers predicted through the day in Johannesburg. If the game is shortened due to overcast conditions, Duckworth/Lewis might come into play, giving the team chasing the target the advantage.
