Preview: West Indies v India – 3rd ODI
Summary

Can India make it 3-0 to sweep the five-match series?

What

The third of the five One-Day Internationals between West Indies and India

When

June 11, 2011. The game begins at 6:30 pm, IST.

Where

Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua. Named after the legendary West Indies batsman from the ’70s and ’80s, the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was built in time to host a few of the matches of the 2007 ICC World Cup. In all, the venue has hosted eight ODI matches till date. Each of the last two ODIs played here in May 2010 saw South Africa post scores in excess of 275 while batting first. It follows that batsmen on both sides would hold the advantage in tomorrow’s game.

The Teams

Although West Indies come into this game having made two changes to their squad, it is still unclear how Danza Hyatt, who has replaced Dwayne Bravo, will address their batting woes in his first ODI game. In the first two ODI matches of the series, West Indies were relatively well placed at 173 for four in 42 overs and 192 for three in 40 overs respectively, when their middle-order failed to finish the innings with a flourish. In the first ODI they collapsed to 214 for nine while in the second ODI, they fared marginally better, posting a total of 240 for the loss of nine wickets at the end of 50 overs. Yet, the hosts can take heart from some good, consistent performances from Ramnaresh Sarwan and Marlon Samuels and should either of them post a big score in the third ODI, India will find their dominance being challenged.

The other change made by the hosts is the inclusion of Kemar Roach in place of Ravi Rampaul. Roach has had a mixed season thus far; he had an outstanding 2011 ICC World Cup (13 wickets from just six games including best figures of six for 27) but followed that with a string of ordinary performances in the recently concluded ODI series against Pakistan (two wickets from four matches at an economy-rate of 5.44).

India are up 2-0 in this series and with Chris Gayle still not being picked in the West Indies squad for the third ODI, the visitors have their best chance to win the series in this game. With Virat Kohli having come good in the second ODI, the Indian top order looks far more reassuring. The bowling, too, with Amit Mishra, Harbhajan Singh and Munaf Patel giving little away to the batsmen, looks geared to wrap up the series with a competent performance.
