UP take 1st inn lead; Guj fight back against Bengal
Mumbai, Nov 5: Suresh Raina hit a sparkling double century (204*) on Day 3 of the 78th Ranji Trophy competition to give Uttar Pradesh a significant first innings lead against Punjab in their Elite – Group A encounter. Raina, whose previous best first-class score was 203, struck a mammoth 241-run partnership with Parvinder Singh (138) to take UP past Punjab’s first innings score of 350. Harbhajan Singh, who is captaining the Punjab side, went wicketless in his 28 overs as UP finally declared their first innings at 596 for five. UP then added to Punjab’s woes by reducing them to 26 for two at the end of day’s play. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Piyush Chawla took one wicket each in Punjab’s second innings. Bengal v Gujarat: Gujarat openers Parthiv Patel (143) and Priyank Panchal (139) shared a 284-run stand for the opening wicket to lead a determined fightback against Bengal’s first innings score of 560. Gujarat finished the day at an impressive 315 for two, 245 runs behind Bengal’s first innings score. Rajasthan v Karnataka: Karnataka are ten wickets away from sealing an impressive win against defending champions Rajasthan. After bowling out Rajasthan for a paltry 255 in their first innings, Karnataka enforced the follow-on against their opponents. Rajasthan were 51 for no loss at stumps still trailing the hosts by 317 runs with ten wickets in hand. Railways v Mumbai: Mumbai, too, have enforced the follow-on against Railways on Day 3 of their Elite –Group A encounter. Railways were 121 for two in their second innings, having surrendered a 207-run lead to Mumbai on the basis of their first innings. Orissa v Saurashtra: Opener Natraj Behera struck an unbeaten century (112*) as Orissa posted a fighting reply to Saurashtra’s mammoth first innings score of 545. Haryana v Delhi: Milind Kumar (119) and all-rounder Rajat Bhatia (107) struck centuries as Delhi took a first innings lead against Haryana. The visitors were 94 for two in reply to Delhi’s first innings score of 352.
