Summary

Pujara 269 gives Saurashtra 3 points

Ahead of the tour to South Africa, top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara hit a double-century against Tamil Nadu to help his team to a first-innings lead in the drawn match. Meanwhile, Mumbai, Karnataka, Goa and J&K posted victories on the last day of the round. Here is the round-up for Day 4 of the fifth round of the tournament:

Group A

Mumbai vs Vidarbha: Shardul Thakur bagged the last two wickets of Akshay Wakhare and Sandeep Singh to end the match in less than 25 minutes on the last day. Mumbai’s 338-run win over Vidarbha earned them six points.

Haryana vs Punjab: Punjab beat Haryana in a thriller on Day 3.

Jharkhand vs Gujarat: Gujarat received three points on the basis of their first-innings lead, while Jharkhand got one for their effort at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur.

Earlier, resuming their second innings on 28 for no loss, Jharkhand were reduced to 166 for seven before the match was called off. Jasprit Bumrah claimed three wickets, while Akshar Patel and Rakesh Dhruve claimed two wickets apiece.

Odisha vs Karnataka: Karnataka added six points to their tally with a four-wicket win over hosts Odisha in Cuttack.

Odisha, who had resumed their second innings on 169 for four on the last day of the game, were bowled out for 279, thanks to Abhimanyu Mithun and HS SHarath. Both bowlers claimed five wickets each in the innings. Besides captain Biplab Samantray, who scored 106, Abhilash Mallick made 50. But the rest of the line-up failed to put up any resistance.

Chasing the 127-run target, the visitors lost Mayank Agarwal with seven runs on the board. And although the Odisha bowlers continued to strike at regular intervals, Karnataka’s middle order managed to attain the target in 41.3 overs for the loss of six wickets.

Ganesh Satish was the top-scorer with 34 runs for Karnataka, while Odisha’s SB Pradhan picked three wickets.

Group B

Tamil Nadu vs Saurashtra: A double-century by Cheteshwar Puajra (269) and 195 by Jaydev Shah helped Saurashtra gain a first-innings lead over Tamil Nadu, who had made 565 for eight. Resuming their innings on 326 for three, Saurashtra made to 581 for six till close of play to gain the lead and hence collect three points from the drawn game.

Bengal vs SSCB: The match at the Palam A Ground between Services and Bengal ended in a draw on the last day. Bengal gained three points, while Services received one point from the match.

Services were bowled out for 304 in the first innings on the last day after Bengal had posted 431 in theirs earlier. When the match ended, Bengal were 126 for three in their second innings.

UPCA vs Rajasthan: UP gained three points on the basis of their first-innings lead against hosts Rajasthan from their drawn match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

Baroda vs MPCA: Baroda gained six points from their victory over Madhya Pradesh.

Group C

Andhra vs Maharashtra: The match between Andhra and Maharashtra ended in a draw with the latter receiving three points on the basis of their first-innings lead. After bowling Andhra out for 317 in the first innings, Maharashtra had posted 440.

When play ended, Andhra were 237 for seven after resuming their second innings on 27 for one on the last day of the game.

Assam vs Himachal: Rishi Dhawan-led Himachal Pradesh beat Assam by an innings and 221 runs.

J&K vs Kerala: J&K bowled Kerala out for 129 on the final day of their game to pull off a thumping 283-run win over Kerala and claim six points for the effort.

Chasing 413, Kerala were bowled out for 129. MG Gujree claimed five, while Samiullah Beig picked three and Ramdyal Punia took two to clinch victory.

Earlier in the day, J&K declared their second innings on 337 for two. Adil Rishi’s 160 not-out and Parvez Rasool’s unbeaten century helped them set the opposition a formidable target.

Goa vs Tripura: The Harshad Gadekar-led Goa attack bowled the hosts to a 49-run win over Tripura on the fourth day of the match.

Chasing 256, Tripura were bowled out for 206 after resuming on 72 for two in the morning. After KB Pawan (70) was sent back by Saurabh Bandekar, the rest of the line-up caved in to the hosts’ bowling attack. Gadekar finished with a five-wicket haul, while Amit Yadav and Shadab Jakati picked up two wickets each.
