Summary

Seven teams post wins on last day

Punjab, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Baroda, Maharashtra and Railways registered wins on the last day of the eighth round of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14. Here is the round-up for the Day 4:

Group A

Karnataka vs Mumbai: For the first time in the history of the premium tournament, Karnataka claimed a outright win over Mumbai when they beat the visitors by 160-runs in the eighth round of the 2013-14 season. Having conceded a first-innings lead, Karnataka came back to set Mumbai a 282-run target on the last day. The Vinay Kumar-led attack then bundled out Mumbai for 121 in 51.3 overs. Vinay Kumar and HS Sharath claimed three wickets each, while Abhimanyu Mithun and Shreyas Gopal picked two apiece to clinch the game.

Earlier in the morning, the home team lost their remaining two wickets and were bowled out for 299.

Punjab vs Delhi: A thrilling 98-run win over Delhi helped Punjab add six points to their tally. Having set the home team a 327-run target, they bowled Delhi out for 228 in 91.3 overs. Rajat Bhatia’s fighting century went in vain as the rest of the line-up caved in to the Punjab attack. Mandeep Gony and Jaskaran Singh claimed three wickets each, while Sandeep Sharma and Gurkeerat Singh picked two wickets apiece.

Gujarat vs Odisha: After bowling Odisha out for 367 in the morning, Gujarat posted 137 in the second innings to set Odisha a 250-run target to achieve in the later part of the day. They then bundled out the opposition for 83 to claim a 166-run victory. Akshar Patel claimed a fiver, while Jaspreet Bumrah picked three and Rakesh Dhruve took two wickets to bowl Gujarat to victory.

Jharkhand vs Vidarbha: Jharkhand gained three points on the basis of a first-innings lead against Vidarbha at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur. The visitors received one point for their effort in the drawn game. Chasing the 276-run target, Vidarbha were 164 for three when the play was called off.

Earlier in the day, the hosts had declared their innings on 161 for nine after resuming on 83 for three.

Group B

Baroda vs Saurashtra: Baroda registered a thumping 239-run win over hosts Saurashtra at Rajkot.

Resuming on 207 for six, Baroda declared their second innings on 265 for nine earlier on the fourth day and set the home team a 355-run target. With a six-wicket haul Yusuf Pathan then helped bowl the team to victory. He was able supported by the rest of the Baroda attack. Bhargav Bhatt claimed three wickets while F Bhaja chipped in with one wicket.

Railways vs SSCB: Railways pulled off a 36-run win over Services. Resuming on 224 for six, Railways declared their second innings on 282 for seven on the last day and set Services a 237-run target. Karn Sharma then claimed early wickets to leave Services on the back foot. The bowler claimed a fiver as he led the downfall of the opposition to help bowl them out for 200 and claim victory in a nail-biting finish. Pratik Desai’s century went in vain as the rest of the line-up failed to contribute substantial runs.

UPCA vs MPCA: Uttar Pradesh were awarded three points on the basis of their first-innings lead against Madhya Pradesh in the drawn game. With no play on the second day the match was reduced to three days. Resuming their second innings on 78 for three in the morning, UP declared their innings on 178 for five. MP had then scored 140 for seven until stumps while chasing 314 runs on the last day.

Tamil Nadu vs Rajasthan: Rajasthan claimed three points on the basis of their first-innings lead, while hosts Tamil Nadu received one point from the game. Resuming their innings on 307 for four, Rajasthan were bowled out for 438 on the last day of the game with a sizeable first-innings lead and the result a foregone conclusion. When play was called off, TN were 76 without loss in the second innings.

Group C

J&K vs Hyderabad: A mammoth first-innings score helped Hyderabad garner three points on the basis a first-innings lead against J&K.

Earlier resuming on the overnight score of 198 for six, Jammu & Kashmir were bowled out for 299 and asked to follow on. M Ravi Kiran had claimed five wickets, while M Hassan had picked three to help bowl the opposition out. Following on, J&K were 127 for one when match ended.

Himachal vs Maharashtra: A comprehensive 10-wicket win over HP gave Maharashtra seven points for their effort.

Maharashtra bowled HP out for 319 earlier in the day and were left to chase down a paltry 60-run target for victory. The openers Harshad Khadiwale and Rohit Motwani then attained the target in 13.1 overs to help post a massive win.

Tripura vs Andhra: Andhra beat Tripura by 10 wickets on the third day of the four-day game.

Kerala vs Goa: Goa received six points for their three-wicket win over Kerala. Goa chased the 79-run target for the loss of seven wickets in 64 overs. Resuming on 82 for five on the last day, the hosts lost two more wickets before attaining the target. Harshad Gadekar’s 57 lower down the order was the highest score in the innings for Goa as they lost quick wickets at the top of the order.
