Mali claims eight for Railways
The round three of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 witnessed Railways’ Ranjitkumar Mali claim eight wickets against Baroda on Day 1 and Kedar Jadhav strike 175 not-out against Hyderabad. Here is the round-up for Day 1:
Group A
Mumbai vs Delhi: Opting to bat first on their home turf, Mumbai lost Kaustubh Pawar with just 10 runs on the board. But the 94-run partnership for the second wicket between Aditya Tare and Wasim Jaffer helped Mumbai to 104, before the latter was dismissed. Tare was the next to be sent back by Manan Sharma for 53, while Siddhesh Lad coming to the crease at No.4, scored 74, before he was castled by Parvinder Awana.
At the end of day’s play, Mumbai were 252 for six with Hiken Shah and Balwinder Sandhu batting on 13 and seven respectively. Delhi’s Ashish Nehra and Awana had claimed two wickets each, while Pawan Suyal and Manan Sharma took a wicket apiece.
Karnataka vs Gujarat: Put in to bat, Karnataka posted 226 for seven on Day 1 against Gujarat at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The home team had scored 80, before R V Dhruve ended the opening stand by dismissing Mayank Agarwal for 42. And three runs later, Akshar Patel removed Lokesh Rahul. Karnataka then kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were on 177 when Kunal Kappor, who had held up one end, was sent back for 57 by MB Patel. When play ended, Ganesh KS Satish was batting on 36 with A Mithun on three.
Odisha vs Vidarbha: Not out on 90, Niranjan Behera helped Odisha to 226 for three at the end of Day 1. He was involved in a 150-run partnership with Govind Podder (74), after being left on 26 for two early in the innings. Vidarbha’s A Jungade claimed openers Girija Rout and Nataraj Behera off consecutive overs, while Shrikant Wagh later sent back Podder.
Biplab Samantray was batting on 31 with Niranjan when play ended.
Haryana vs Jharkhand: After they opted to bat first, Haryana lost opener Nitin Saini in the fifth over in Lahli. However, the middle order ensured that there were no further hiccups and took the team to a respectable total at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium. Rahul Dalal made 58, while Sunny Singh made 53. When stumps were called the hosts were 296 for eight with stand-in captain Harshal Patel (22*) and Mohit Sharma (20*) in the middle.
Group B
Saurashtra vs UPCA: An unbeaten century by Sheldon Jackson and a determined 74 by No.3 batsman Sagar Jogiyani saw Saurashtra post 235 for four, after being left on 14 for two. When play ended, Jackson was batting on 102 with A V Vasavada on 17.
SSCB vs Rajasthan: Pratik Desai’s 65 at the top of the order and Rajat Paliwal’s 71 lower down the order followed by a 103-ball 45 by No.7 bat Vishnu Tiwari, helped Services reach a comfortable 275 for six on Day 1.
Earlier, Aniket Choudhary (two wickets) and Pankaj Singh (three wickets) had left Services on 130 for five, after Rajasthan elected to bowl first.
Baroda vs Railways: Railways were trailing by 152 runs with nine wickets in hand, after RL Mali ran through the Baroda line-up to finish with eight for 48. Supporting the pacer, Murali Kartik and K Upadhyay picked a wicket each to help bundle Baroda out for 176.
Railways then lost opener SS Shukla without a run on board, but Amit Paunikar and NS Bhille saw the team through to stumps.
MPCA vs Bengal: Naman Ojha propelled MP to 293 for four with a 101 not-out at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Mohnish Mishra made 64, while opener Jalaj Saxena scored 45. Udit Birla was batting on 14 with Ojha when play ended.
Group C
Maharashtra vs Hyderabad: Kedar Jadhav (175*) and Harshad Khadiwale (107) powered Maharashtra to 337 for four after opting to bat first. Hosts Hyderabad claimed Chirag Khurana and Vijay Zol early to leave Maharashtra on 32 for two. But Jadhav joined Khadiwale to take the team to 238, before Amol Shine sent the opener back. Shine also claimed Bawane nine runs later. At stumps, Jadhav was batting with Motwani (15).
Andhra vs Assam: Asked to bat first at the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh were 233 for five at stumps. KS Bharat top-scored for Andhra with 70, while B Sumnath was batting on 56 off 157 when play ended.
AK Das and PN Das claimed two wickets each for Assam and Abu Nechim Ahmed picked one.
Tripura vs Kerala: After Timir Chanda opted to bat first, his team’s line-up caved in to the Kerala attack and were struggling on 136 for nine at stumps. Yogesh Takawale’s 45 stood out as batsmen fell like a pack of cards around him. With four batsmen returning for naught, Tripura were on the back foot.
Sandeep Warrier claimed three for 27, while P Parameswaran, KR Sreejith and V Manoharan taken for two wickets each. When play ended, Viki Saha was yet to open his account, while A Chakraborty was batting on five.
J & K vs Himachal: Playing at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharmasala, the hosts bowled J&K out for 178 earlier in the first day. Although Parvez Rasool scored 101-ball 97 and opener AN Reshi made 47, the rest of the line-up failed to reach double-digits. Rishi Dhawan picked four wickets, while Vikramjeet Malik took three and WR Ahmed, BB Sharam and AS Bali claimed a wicket each.
HP were trailing by 92 runs with nine wickets in hand and Sangram Singh and Paras Dogra were batting on 24 and 29 respectively when play ended.
