HP, Kerala win on Day 3
Himachal Pradesh and Kerala registered victories over Tripura and Jammu & Kashmir respectively on the third day of Round 3 of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 season. Here is the round-up for Day 3:
Group A
Mumbai vs Delhi: After contributing with the bat, Mumbai’s stand-in captain and ace pacer Zaheer Khan claimed five wickets to help bowl Delhi out for 324 in the first innings with the scores leveled. Javed Khan picked three in the innings, while Vishal Dabholkar picked two. Delhi’s Mithun Manhas was the top-scorer for the team with 113 in their first innings. It was one of the rare occasions when both teams had put up the same number of runs in the first innings.
When play ended, Aditya Tare had taken Mumbai to 198 for two with a 115 not-out and was batting with Siddhesh Lad (67*).
Karnataka vs Gujarat: At 373 for six, Gujarat were leading by 67 runs with a wicket in hand in the first innings when bad light halted play at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. An unbeaten 121 by B H Merai helped the visitors secure a first-innings lead. The middle-order batsman was batting with RV Dhruve on 42 when play was called off.
Odisha vs Vidarbha: Resuming on the overnight score of 14 for two, Vidarbha had prodded their way to 199 for three at the end of the third day on their home ground. Opener Faiz Fazal was unbeaten on 124 with Hemang Badani on 14 at stumps. They were trailing by 254 runs with seven wickets in hand as the match headed into the final day.
Haryana vs Jharkhand: Chasing 202, Jharkhand require 128 runs and have seven wickets in hand as the game heads into the final day.
Earlier, Sankar Rao (four wickets) and Varun Aaron (three wickets) wrecked the Haryana line-up, while Shahbaz Nadeem, Bhavin Thakker and Ishank Jaggi picked a wicket each to bowl the hosts out for 123 in the second innings and set the stage for a result.
Jharkhand were 74 for three with Bhavin Thakker (29) and Ishank Jaggi (27) in the middle when stumps were called.
Group B
Saurashtra vs UPCA: In reply to Saurashtra’s humongous first-innings total of 632 for seven, Uttar Pradesh were 226 for four and trailing by 406 runs at the end of third day’s play in Rajkot. Parvinder Singh was batting on 26 with Arish Alam on 33 at stumps.
Earlier, Saurashtra’s Kamlesh Makvana scored a century and was not out on 101 when the home team declared its innings.
SSCB vs Rajasthan: Resuming on 131 for two on the third morning, Rajasthan were powered past Services’ first-innings score of 325 by centurions Robin Bist (107*) and Rajesh Bihsnoi (112). The home team was 345 for three when play ended on Saturday.
Baroda vs Railways: Propelled by Arindam Gosh’s double-century, Railways scored 441 for eight before declaring their first innings on Day 3. In reply, Baroda, who were skittled out for 176 in the first innings, were 33 for one in the second innings when play ended.
MPCA vs Bengal: Bowled out for 263, Bengal were asked to follow on and were trailing by 125 runs with all wickets intact in the second innings when play ended on the third day. When play resumes on the last day, MPCA will be pushing for an outright win at the Eden Gardens.
Earlier, resuming their first innings on 117 for one, the Bengal line-up succumbed to Jalaj Saxena and Ankit Sharma’s bowling. Anustup Mujumdar, sent back by Amarjeet Singh, was Bengal’s first wicket of the day. The batting line-up then collapsed without offering much resistance. MP’s Arindam Das, who had resumed his innings on 70, was dismissed by Sharma. Following on, Bengal were 43 without loss at stumps with Rohan Banerjee and Das at the crease.
Group C
Andhra vs Assam: Propelled by Dheeraj Jadhav's 158, Assam had surpassed Andhra's first-innings score of 297 and taken a 55-run lead as the match heads into a likely draw on the last day. When play ended on Day 3, Assam had were 352 for seven with Kunal Saikia batting on three.
Tripura vs Kerala: Kerala claimed a comprehensive nine-wicket win over Tripura at the Conor Vayal Stadium, Tellicherry in Kannur. Left-arm spinner CP Shahid claimed seven for 45 to bowl Tripura out for 202 in the second innings. Kerala’s batsmen then chased down the 46-run target in 8.4 overs for the loss of one wicket.
J & K vs Himachal: With a five-wicket haul in J&K's second innings, HP captain Rishi Dhawan led his team to an innings and 192-run win at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharmasala. After their batsmen raised a mountainous total, the bowlers bundled out J&K for a paltry 88 in the second innings. Vikramjeet Malik, who claimed J&K opener Ian Dev Singh on the second day, claimed Manik Gupta on the third morning to give the hosts their first wicket of the day. Dhawan and Akshay Chauhan (three wickets) then ran through the rest of the line-up to claim victory.
