Summary

Rishi Dhawan claims fiver for Himachal

Himachal skipper Rishi Dhawan picked a fiver to help bowl Hyderabad out for 237 on Day 1 of the four-day match. Meanwhile, the Punjab vs Gujarat match was dominated by the bowlers and the Maharashtra vs Goa game witnessed a run-fest in Pune. Here is the round-up for Day 1:

Group A

Punjab vs Gujarat: 16 Wickets tumbled on the first day of the Punjab vs Gujarat battle at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.

Opting to bowl first, the Jasprit Bumrah-led (five-for) Gujarat attack wrapped up the Punjab innings for 172. Punjab opener Jiwanjot Singh rallied on to make 86 as the rest of the line-up caved in.

Sandeep Sharma then claimed three, while S Kaul and Manpreet Gony picked a wicket each to leave Gujarat on 61 for six at stumps. Trailing by 111 runs with four wickets in hand, Gujarat’s Rajul Bhatt and Akshar Patel were batting when play ended.

Delhi vs Haryana: After S J Badhwar and J O Sharma picked two wickets each to leave Delhi tottering on 48 for three, the Gautam Gambhir-led side didn’t quite recover from the early blows. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were 194 for eight at stumps. Badhwar finished the day with four wickets in his bag.

Vidarbha vs Karnataka: With his second consecutive century, Vidarbha opener Faiz Fazal had taken the hosts to 244 for two at stumps. After Shalabh Shirvastava elected to bat first against Karnataka at the VCA Stadium, the home team lost opener Akshay Kolhar with just one run on the board in the first over. Amol Ubarhande was sent back by Abrar Kazi 62 runs later, bringing the Vidarbha skipper to the crease. At stumps, Fazal was batting on 139 with Shrivastava on 75.

Jharkhand vs Odisha: With five ducks in their line-up, Jharkhand were bowled out for 221 by Odihsa. Bhavik Thaker was stranded on 61 as wickets fell like a pack of cards around him. Basant Mohanty claimed five for 60, while AR Sahoo took three to help wrap up the Jharkhand innings in 67.4 overs.

In reply, Odisha were 37 for one at stumps.

Group B

Bengal vs Saurashtra: Put in to bat at the Eden Gardens, Laxmi Shukla’s valiant 155 helped Bengal to 303 after they were struggling on 77 for five. With 42 runs, Subhomoy Das helped his captain take the team to 215 before being sent back by Sandip Maniar.

Maniar and Chirag Jani claimed three wickets each, while Abhishek Bhatt and Saurya Sanandiya took two wickets apiece to bowl the home team out on Day 1.

Saurashtra then batted for an over before stumps, but they hadn’t opened their account.

MPCA vs SSCB: MP were 236 for nine at stumps after electing to bat first at the Palam A Ground. Naman Ojha scored 63 for MP, while Services’ Suraj Yadav claimed four wickets to wreck the opposition’s middle-order.

When play ended, Amarjeet Singh and Ishwar Pandey were batting on 26 and five respectively.

Tamil Nadu vs UPCA: After losing a wicket off the first ball and reeling on 20 for four upon electing to bat first, R Prassana salvaged the TN innings with a courageous knock. The No.6 batsman made 104 to help Tamil Nadu to 258 for seven at stumps. He was batting with Aswin Crist (54*) at the end of the day’s play.

Accounting for two wickets each, RP Singh and Amit Mishra claimed the first four TN wickets. Imtiaz Ahmed also claimed two, while Aris Alam picked one wicket.

Railways vs Rajasthan: Opting to field first, Rajasthan’s Pankaj Singh claimed Railways’ top-order, while Rituraj Singh, A V Choudhary, Deepak Chahar and R Bist picked a wicket each to leave the visitors on 223 for seven at stumps. MG Rawat was batting with Anureet Singh when stumps were called.

Group C

Hyderabad vs Himachal: Claiming five wickets against Hyderabad, skipper Rishi Dhawan led from the front to help bowl the opponents out for 237 on the first day, after opting to bowl first. TL Suman was the top-scorer for Hyderabad with 65.

Maharashtra vs Goa: Centurions Harshad Khadiwale and Kedar Jadhav took Maharashtra to 361 for three against Goa. Khadiwale was batting on 147 with A Bawne on 37 at stumps.

J&K vs Andhra: At the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur, Andhra opted to field first and kept the J&K batsmen on a tight leash. Losing wickets at critical junctures, J&K had plodded their way to 173 for six as No.3 batsman Bandeep Singh anchored the innings. He was batting on 68 with Samiullah Beig on 27 at stumps.

Shaik Basha, who took two wickets, dealt a double-blow by removing Mohsin Iqbal and Owais Shah for duck off successive deliveries, leaving the opposition on 113 for six.

Tripura vs Assam: Assam were trailing by 51 runs with nine wickets in hand after their bowlers had put them in a commanding position against Tripura on the first day. The pace trio of Abu Nechim Ahmed (three wickets), Arup Das (four wickets) and Pritam Das (three wickets) skittled Tripura out for 136 after electing to field in Agartala. In reply, Assam were 85 for one with Dheeraj Jadhav on 40 and Sibsankar Roy on 15 when play ended.
