Khadiwale slams 262, while Pujara scores ton
Maharashtra opener Harshad Khadiwale scored 262 as the hosts piled up a big score against Goa. In another encounter of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14, Saurashtra’s top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara scored a century as the rest of the line-up caved in to Bengal at the Eden Gardens. Here is the round-up for Day 2:
Group A
Punjab vs Gujarat: A valiant 43 by Gujarat’s No.10 batsman Bhavesh Baria helped his side to 127, after they resumed their first innings on 61 for six on Day 2. Sandeep Sharma, S Kaul, Manpreet Gony and Harbhajan Singh picked a wicket each on the second day to bowl the visitors out.
At stumps, Punjab were 127 for two at in the second innings with T Kohli and Mandeep Singh batting on 14 and eight respectively. J Chouhan and R Singh scored 51 and 47 respectively before being sent back by AR Patel.
Delhi vs Haryana: Delhi were leading by 98 runs against Haryana at the end of day’s play in Delhi. They were 35 without loss with Unmukt Chand and Gautam Gambhir at the crease at stumps.
Bowled out for 201 on the second day, the Ishant Sharma and Rajat Bhatia-led Delhi attack skittled Haryana out for 138. Ishant claimed five, while Bhatia picked four as the bowlers ran through the Haryana line-up in 55 overs. Pravinder Awana chipped in with one wicket.
Vidarbha vs Karnataka: Although Vidarbha opener Faiz Fazal was the first to depart in the morning for 147, Shalabh Shrivastava, resuming his innings on 75, went on to bat through the day. He was batting on 187 at stumps with S Ruikar on 48. The hosts had piled on 457 for six at the end of second day’s play.
Jharkhand vs Odisha: Odisha were leading by 24 runs with five wickets in hand in the 1st innings against Jharkhand at the end of second day’s play in Cuttack. Resuming on 37 for one, the home team had reached 245 for five at stumps. A responsible 94 by opener Bikas Pati and Biplab Samantray’s 64 along with Niranjan Behera’s 39 helped Odisha see the day through. Samantray was batting with S Sahoo at stumps.
Group B
Bengal vs Saurashtra: Bengal were leading by 83 runs with openers S Lahiri and Arindam Das batting on four and one respectively at stumps on Day 2.
Earlier, Cheteshwar Pujara scored 102 even as the rest of the line-up caved in to the Bengal bowlers. Leading the hosts’ attack, Ashoke Dinda claimed four wickets to help bowl Saurashtra out for 225 in the first innings and secure a first-innings lead.
MPCA vs SSCB: Services had taken a first-innings lead of 17 runs and had seven wickets in hand at the end of second day’s play at the Palam A Ground in Delhi. At stumps, Rajat Paliwal was batting on 92 with Yashpal Singh on 81.
Earlier, Madhya Pradesh lost their last wicket after adding just three runs to their overnight total and were bowled out for 239. The hosts then posted 256 for three. Although they lost Sounik Chattterjee and N Verma for single-digit scores, Pratik Desai made 58. Jalaj Saxena took the three Services wickets that fell on Day 2.
Tamil Nadu vs UPCA: Resuming on 258 for seven, Tamil Nadu were bowled out for 297 in the first innings on the second day. In response, UP were 171 for five at stumps. PS Gupta was batting on 55 with ER Dwivedi on five when play ended. TN’s Aushik Srinivas had picked two wickets, while Sunil Sam, L Balaji and R Malolan claimed a wicket each.
Railways vs Rajasthan: Deepak Chahar, Pankaj Singh and Rituraj Singh picked a wicket each on the second day to wrap up Railways’ first innings for 283 after resuming on the overnight score of 223 for seven. Pankaj Singh finished with a four-for in the innings.
Losing wickets at regular intervals, Rajasthan were then reduced to 142 for six at stumps. Vineet Saxena, who held up one end for the home team, was batting on 73 along with Chahar when play ended.
Group C
Hyderabad vs Himachal: After a 79-run opening stand, Himachal Pradesh lost wickets at regular intervals, but took a first-innings lead before getting bowled out for 296. Contributions from the lower-middle order batsmen BB Sharma (91) and Rishi Dhawan (47) and 45 by Vikramjeet Malik in the lower order helped the home team to a 59-run lead. Hyderabad's Alfred Absolem took four wickets and P Kanishk claimed three, while Ravi Kiran picked two and GH Vihari chipped in with one wicket to bowl out HP.
At stumps, Hyderabad were 40 without loss in Dharamsala.
Maharashtra vs Goa: With a magnificent double-century, Harshad Khadiwale propelled Maharashtra to a mammoth first-innings score of 635 against Goa. The opener made 262 before being sent back by Amit Yadav. Shrikant Mundhe made 75 and Ankit Bawne contributed 71 in the run-fest.
In reply, Goa were 73 for one at stumps. Swapnil Asnodkar was batting on 25 with H Gadekar on 11 when play was called off.
J&K vs Andhra: With S Marupuri batting on 17 and K Harish unbeaten on 21, Andhra were trailing by 34 runs with two wickets in hand in the first innings at stumps on Day 2.
Earlier in the day, J&K’s first innings was brought to end for 225 after resuming on 173 for six. Andhra then plodded their way to 191 for eight at the end of day’s play. J&K’s R Dayal, M Mudhasir, Owais Shah and Parvez Rasool struck at regular intervals and finished the day with two wickets each.
Tripura vs Assam: Assam were leading by 284 runs with six wickets in hand at stumps against Tripura. With a well-compiled 194, Dheeraj Jadhav powered Assam to a 420 for four in their first innings. He was ably supported by Trajinder Singh, who was sent back by Rana Dutta just one run short of a well-deserved century. When play ended, Niraj Patel and Gokul Sharma were batting on 44 and 20 respectively. Manisankar Murasingh, who dismissed Jadhav, had also claimed SA Roy earlier in the day.
