Summary

Odisha’s Mohanty claims 6; Gambhir hits 153

Odihsa pacer Basant Mohanty, who had picked a five-for in the first innings, claimed six wickets against Jharkhand in the second innings. Meanwhile, Delhi captain Gautam Gambhir scored 153 in the second innings against Haryana. Here is the round-up for Day 3:

Group A

Punjab vs Gujarat: Gujarat need 322 runs with seven wickets in hand on the last day of their game at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. Chasing 355, Gujarat were 33 for three at stumps. They lost their three wickets for just 14 runs as Sandeep Sharma and S Kaul dealt early blows. Samit Gohel was batting on 20 with Rujul Bhatt on four.

Earlier, Punjab were bowled out for 309 after resuming on 127 for two on Saturday. Jasprit Bumrah (three wickets), Mehul Patel (three wickets) and Rakesh Dhruve (two wickets) ran through the line-up to end the innings.

Delhi vs Haryana: With a day remaining in the match, Haryana need 313 runs, while Delhi need five wickets to pull off a win.

Earlier, a 153 by captain Gautam Gambhir helped Delhi post a second-innings score of 312 for five before declaring their innings and setting a 376-run target for Haryana. In search of a victory, the Delhi bowlers then claimed five wickets in 27 overs to leave the visitors on 63 for five in the second innings. Parwinder Awana got the ball rolling by ending the opening stand for 44 with the wicket of Nitin Saini. Varun Sood then claimed Sunny Singh, while Ishant Sharma sent back A Khod with the score still on 60 in the next over. Sood then trapped Ashish Hooda and Rahul Dalal lbw off successive deliveries to leave Haryana tottering on 61 for five.

At stumps, Avi Barot and Sachin Rana were both batting on one.

Vidarbha vs Karnataka: Karnataka were trailing by 290 runs with eight wickets in hand in Nagpur after Vidarbha were bowled out for 542 earlier in the day. Vidarbha’s Shalabh Shrivasta, who was heading for a double-ton, was sent back for 193 by HS Sharath, who finished with four wickets in the innings.

At stumps, the visitors were 252 for two with Lokesh Rahul on 59 and Manish Pandey batting on 21.

Jharkhand vs Odisha: Jharkhand had taken a 63-run lead with four wickets in hand at the end of the third day’s play at the DRIEMS Ground in Cuttack.

Earlier, after resuming on 245 for five, hosts Odisha lost their remaining five wickets for 62 runs. However, bowled out for 307, they had taken a first-innings lead in the four-day game against Jharkhand.

Jharkhand lost five wickets early and were reeling on 37 for five as Basant Mohanty ran through the line-up. Pappu Singh’s 56 and Saurabh Tiwary’s 57 helped the visitors stem the fall of wickets. Jharkhand were 149 for six at stumps with Pappu Singh still at the crease with B Thaker on nine. Mohanty finished the day with six scalps.

Group B

Bengal vs Saurashtra: Wriddhiman Saha (52) and veteran batsman Amol Mujumdar (69) helped Bengal end Day 3 with a 272-run lead with two wickets in hand. After securing a first-innings lead yesterday, the Bengal batsmen resumed their second innings on five without loss and were 194 for eight at stumps on Saturday evening. After Saurashtra’s Sandip Maniar gave the visitors their first breakthrough with the wicket of S Lahiri, Abhishek Bhatt and Chirag Jani claimed wickets at regular intervals and helped keep a stranglehold on the hosts. Apart from Saha and Mujumdar, the rest of the line-up failed to make significant contributions.

MPCA vs SSCB: At 127 for three in the second innings, Madhya Pradesh were trailing by 25 runs with seven wickets in hand at stumps on Day 3.

Earlier, Yashpal Singh’s 142 had ensured Services a first-innings lead before they were bowled out for 391. MP’s Jalaj Saxena and Jatin Saxena finished with four-wicket hauls each in the innings.

When play ended, MP’s Naman Ojha and captain Devendra Bundela were batting on 61 and five respectively.

Tamil Nadu vs UPCA: At the end of the third day’s play in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh had surpassed TN’s first-innings score of 297 and had taken a 114-run lead with three wickets in hand. UP skipper Piyush Chawla had slammed a century and was batting on 114 with Amit Mishra who was on 30. At stumps, they were 411 for seven.

Railways vs Rajasthan: Resuming on 142 for six, Rajasthan were bowled out for 178 in the first innings. However, their bowlers then bundled out Railways for 150 in the second innings. Deepak Chahar and A Choudhary picked three wickets each, while Pankaj Singh and Rituraj Singh claimed a wicket apiece to give their team an opportunity to pull off a win.

Chasing 256 runs, Rajasthan were five without loss at stumps.

Group C

Hyderabad vs Himachal: Resuming on 40 for no loss in the second innings on Day 3, Hyderabad were 319 for seven at stumps with S Quadri batting on 77 with A Absolem on four.

Having conceded a first-innings lead to hosts HP on Day 2, Hyderabad were leading by 260 runs with three wickets in hand. HP’s Akshay Chauhan had claimed a five-for and Rishi Dhawan had taken two wickets on Saturday. With a day remaining in the game, it remains to be seen if the teams would look for an outright win.

Maharashtra vs Goa: Goa were trailing by 338 runs with five wickets in hand at stumps on Day 3. Resuming their first innings on 73 for one, Goa had scored 297 for five when play ended in Pune; No.3 batsman Harshad Gadekar was batting on 86 with Keenan Vaz on nine.

J & K vs Andhra: With the encounter between J&K and Andhra poised for a result on the last day of the game, Andhra need 63 runs, while J&K need two wickets to register a win.

It was a day for the bowlers at Anantpur. After Andhra were bowled out for 205 in the first innings earlier in the day, J&K capitulated for 121 runs in their second innings. DP Vijaykumar claimed five for 52, while Shaik Basha took three and GK Chiranjeevi and M Suresh picked one wicket each to bundle out J&K in 41.2 overs.

Chasing 142, the Andhra batsmen then caved in to the J&K bowlers without much resistance. With six scores of below five runs, Andhra were struggling to reach the target and were 79 for eight when play ended. Ram Dayal and M Mudhasir picked three wickets apiece, while S Beigh claimed one. At stumps, Andhra’s M Suresh was batting on 27 with K Harish.

Tripura vs Assam: After Assam declared their first innings on 526 for five with a 390-run lead, Tripura were trailing by 231 runs with seven wickets in hand at the end of the third day’s play.

Tripura were 159 for three at stumps with Samrat Singha batting on 57 alongside Abbas Ali on seven. Assam’s Arup Das claimed two wickets, while Pritam Das picked one.
