Dhawan claims five, Jaffer hits ton
Former Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer struck his 50th first-class century at the Wankhede Stadium in the ongoing match against Vidarbha. And leading from the front, HP captain Rishi Dhawan claimed a fiver to help bundle out Assam early on the first day and returned to contribute with the bat in Dharamsala. Here is the round-up for Day 1 of the fifth round of the tournament:
Group A
Mumbai vs Vidarbha: A sterling century by opener Wasim Jaffer helped Mumbai to 254 for eight on Day 1, after being asked to bat first. Vidarbha pacer Sandeep Singh exploited the conditions early in the day and removed the top order to leave the hosts on 39 for three. However, thanks to the experienced campaigner Jaffer, Mumbai rallied on and saw the day through. Jaffer was batting on 133 with Vishal Dabholkar on the other end when stumps were called.
Haryana vs Punjab: After bowling Haryana out for 163, Punjab were 50 for three at stumps on the first day at their match in Lahli. After the hosts opted to bowl first, VRV Singh claimed a fiver, while S BG Sharma took three to rattle Haryana.
SJ Badhwar, HV Patel and Mohit Sharma claimed a wicket each to strike early for the home team later in the day.
Jharkhand vs Gujarat: Opting to bat first, Jharkhand were 195 for five at the end of day’s play against Gujarat. After losing a couple of wickets early on, R N Nemat's 78 and Saurabh Tiwary's 75 helped save the day for the hosts. Tiwary was still at the crease at close of play.
Odisha vs Karnataka: On the first day of the match at Cuttack, Abhimanyu Mithun’s six for 52 helped bowl hosts Odisha out for 226. Abhilash Mallick was the top-scorer for the home team as the rest of the line-up succumbed to the visitors attack.
At 22 for no loss, Karnataka were trailing by 204 runs at stumps.
Group B
Tamil Nadu vs Saurashtra: 103* by Abhinav Mukund and half-centuries by Murali Vijay and S Badrinath put Tamil Nadu in a comfortable position on Day 1 after being put in to bat first. Baba Aparajith was batting on 40 with Abhinav Mukund when play ended with TN on 268 for two against Saurashtra.
Bengal vs SSCB: Not out on 139, opener Arindam Das had taken Bengal to 242 for three at stumps on Thursday evening. SS Lahiri was batting on three when play ended. Irfan Khan and Pratik Desai had picked up a wicket each for Services.
UPCA vs Rajasthan: A four-wicket haul by AV Choudhary and three wickets by Deepak Chahar along with Pankaj Singh – apart from Pankaj Singh's two wickets – had helped Rajasthan bowl UP out for 226 on the first day after electing to field first in Jaipur. The hosts then lost opener Vineet Saxena without a run on the board. The wicket taken by A Mishra signaled the end of day's play.
Group C
Assam vs Himachal: Opting to bowl first at Dharamsala, Himachal skittled Assam out for 81. Rishi Dhawan took five, while Vikramjeet Malik took three wickets and AN Chauhan picked two to bundle the visitors out on the first day. In reply, the hosts had taken a first-innings lead and were 199 for four when play ended. Nikhil Gangta was batting on 43 with Dhawan on 36 at stumps.
J&K vs Kerala: Jammu & Kashmir had piled on 312 for four against Kerala after being asked to bat first in Jammu. 98 by IR Singh at the top of the innings and half-centuries by Majid Dar and Hardip Singh helped the home team pile on the runs. Dar was batting on 53 with Hardip on 51 at stumps.
Goa vs Tripura: 102 by AS Desai took Goa to 231 for eight at the end of first day’s play. After the 176-run opening stand between Desai and A Asnodkar (75) was ended by Rana Dutta, the home team’s middle order collapsed like a pack of cards in Goa. Dutta claimed four wickets for Tripura, while Sanjay Mujumdar took three and MB Mora Singh took one wicket.
