Summary

Mukund hits double-ton; Karthik, Yusuf hit tons

TN’s Abhinav Mukund hit a double-century, while Dinesh Karthik, Yusuf Pathan, Aditya Tare and S Lahiri scored centuries in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2013-14 matches. Here is the round-up for Day 2 of the fifth round of the tournament.

Group A

Mumbai vs Vidarbha: After the Mumbai pacers ran through the Vidarbha line-up to bundle them out for 113, their batsmen clobbered the Vidarbha attack to take the hosts’ lead to 327 at the end of second day’s play.

Earlier, Shardul Thakhur took three wickets, while Zaheer Khan and debutant Akbar Khan picked two each and Abhishek Nayar, Vishal Dabholkar and Kaustubh Pawar took a wicket each to skittle out the opposition. Mumbai, who were bowled out for 261 in the first innings earlier in the day, then scored 179 for one before the close of play. Aditya Tare slammed 110 and was batting with Ajinkya Rahane (62*) at stumps.

Haryana vs Punjab: Haryana were leading by 96 runs with five wickets in hand at the close of play on the second day. Punjab's Saneep Sharma claimed three Haryana wickets, while S Kaul and VRV Singh took a wicket each to leave Haryana on 117 for five at stumps. S Rana was batting on 21 with Amit Mishra on 13 when play ended.

Earlier, Punjab were bowled out for 184. Left tottering on 88 for six, M Sidhana (43) and Gurkeerat Singh (51) had helped Punjab to a marginal first-innings lead. Harshal Patel and S Budhwar claimed four wickets each as they wrecked the Punjab line-up, while Mohit Sharma and S Rana had picked a wicket apiece.

Jharkhand vs Gujarat: At 168 for two in the second innings with S Gohel batting on 66 with Parthiv Patel on 75, Gujarat were trailing by 121 runs in the second innings at stumps.

Earlier, resuming on 194 for five, Jharkhand were bowled out for 289. While Saurabh Tiwary made 91, useful contributions by Shahbaz Nadeem and Sunny Gupta lower down the order helped Jharkhand to a respectable score in the first innings.

Odisha vs Karnataka: Karnataka had taken a lead of 62 runs and had six wickets in hand in the first innings at stumps on Day 2. A century by Manish Pandey and 67 by KL Rahul had helped Karnataka surpass Odisha's first-innings score. When play ended, Pandey was batting on 108 with CM Gautam on 11.

Group B

Tamil Nadu vs Saurashtra: 240 by Abhinav Mukund and 133 by Dinesh Karthik helped TN to 565 for eight before declaring their first innings at Chepauk. Saurashtra’s Jaydev Unadkat picked four wickets in the run-fest.

In reply, Saurashtra had lost opener Sagar Jogiyani and were 12 for one at stumps with Bhushan Chauhan and Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease.

Bengal vs SSCB: Bengal's Arindam Das had taken his score to 165 before returning to the dressing room on the second day. Although the lower order failed to contribute, S Lahiri’s 108, in addition to Das' knock, helped Bengal pile on 431 runs in the first innings after resuming on 242 for three. Services' T Koteswar Rao finished with a four-wicket haul in the innings.

In reply, Services were 39 without loss at stumps.

UPCA vs Rajasthan: Having already lost a wicket without a run on the board on Day 1, Rajasthan were bowled out for 185 in the first innings. UP pacer Amit Mishra led the opposition’s downfall with a seven-wicket haul. Ali Murtuza took two wickets and Imitiaz Ahmed picked one scalp.

At stumps, UP were 46 for two in the second innings and had taken a 87-run lead. Having lost both the openers, UP captain, Mohammad Kaif, was batting on four with Prashant Gupta on 15.

Baroda vs MPCA: After 20 wickets fell on the first day at the Moti Bagh Stadium, Baroda, who resumed their second innings on nine without loss, posted 245 before being bowled out on the second day. Yusuf Pathan slammed 105 off as many balls to help put up a respectable total on the board as the rest of the line-up caved in. MP’s Jalaj Saxena claimed six wickets, while Jatin Saxena took three to help bowl Baroda out.

MPCA were 58 for five at stumps in the second innings with Rameez Khan batting on 15 and SS Sharma yet to open his account. B Bhatt had taken three wickets and K Patel had picked two.

Group C

Andhra vs Maharashtra: With 196 for three at stumps, Maharashtra were trailing by 121 runs with seven wickets in hand at the end of Day 2. On the brink of his century, Kedar Jadhav was batting on 97 with Ankit Bawne on eight when play ended, while Vijay Zol had made 73.

Earlier, Andhra were bowled out for 317 after resuming their first innings on 232 for three. Domnic Joseph, Anupam Sanklecha and Akshay Darekar had picked three wickets each, while Bharatkumar Solanki had chipped in with one to bowl Andhra out in 110.1 overs.

Assam vs Himachal: 102 not-out by Bipul Sharma along with 99 by N Gangta and a half-century by captain Rishi Dhawan helped HP pile on 463 for nine before they declared their innings on Day 2. With two wickets each, Dhawan and Vikramjeet Malik claimed the Assam top order, while Akshay Chauhan and Vishal Bhatia picked a wicket each. Left tottering on 97 for six, Assam were trailing by 285 runs at stumps.

J&K vs Kerala: Resuming on 312 for four, J&K made 377 before being bowled out in Jammu. P Parameswaran and Sandeep Warrier claimed four wickets each to help bowl out the hosts.

Goa vs Tripura: After being bowled out for 252 early on the second morning after resuming on 231 for eight, Goa bowlers skittled Tripura out for 174. S Abbas Ali’s 60 was the highest score for Tripura as their batting line-up collapsed in 68.3 overs.

Goa’s Harshad Gadekar, Shadab Jakati and Amit Yadav had taken three wickets each, while B Mangaldas claimed one. In reply, Goa were eight without loss and leading by 86 runs at stumps. VA Jagdessh was batting on 84 with R Prem on 42 when play ended.
