Baroda, Punjab, HP post wins
Baroda beat Madhya Pradesh, Haryana beat Punjab, while Himachal Pradesh beat Assam in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2013-14 season on the third day of the fifth round. Here is the round-up for Day 3 of the fifth round of the tournament:
Group A
Mumbai vs Vidarbha: As the match at Wankhede heads in to the last day, Mumbai need two wickets to win, while Vidarbha need 353 runs. Although captain Shalabh Shrivastava resisted with a 91-ball 69, he fell towards the end of day's play. At stumps, the visitors were 177 for eight and facing defeat.
Earlier, the Mumbai batsmen had continued to pile on the runs and scored 281 for four before declaring their innings. Aditya Tare returned for 172, while Ajinkya Rahane scored 133 to put up a mountainous target for Vidarbha.
Haryana vs Punjab: Sandeep Sharma and Gurkeerat Singh took Punjab to a thrilling three-wicket win over Haryana in Lahli. Chasing 135, the visitors were reeling on 46 for six when the pair came together and put up a fight to scale the target. Gurkeerat departed on 37 leaving the team on 117 for five. However, Sandeep continued to resist and took the team across the line with an unbeaten with a 65-ball 37 with S Kaul (1 off 23).
Earlier, the hosts made 155 after resuming on 117 for five. Sandeep claimed six wickets, while VRV Singh took three and S Kaul took one to bowl Haryana out in 53.2 overs.
Jharkhand vs Gujarat: 189 by captain Parthiv Patel took Gujarat to 352 for nine before declaring their first innings with a lead. Although the rest of the line-up folded without any substantial contributions, Parthiv's knock put Gujarat in a comfortable position in case of a draw – assuring his team three points on the basis of their first-innings lead.
At stumps, Jharkhand were 28 without loss in the second innings and trailing by 35 runs.
Odisha vs Karnataka: Resuming on their overnight score of 288 for four, Karnataka were bowled out for 379 on Day 3 at the DRIEMS Ground in Cuttack with a first-innings lead.
In response, Odisha were 169 for four with Biplab Samantray batting on 50 with A Mallick (47). Karnataka's HS Sharath had taken three of the four wickets that fell.
Group B
Tamil Nadu vs Saurashtra: 152 by Cheteshwar Pujara and 133 by Jaydev Shah took Saurashtra to 326 for three at stumps on the third day. Both the batsmen were still at the crease when play ended.
Bengal vs SSCB: Services were trailing by 170 runs in the first innings with four wickets in hand against Bengal in Delhi. Resuming their first innings on 39 without loss, the hosts posted 261 for six until play ended on the third day. At stumps, S Swain was batting on 56 with S Yadav (6).
UPCA vs Rajasthan: A well-compiled 144 by Prashant Gupta helped UP set Rajasthan a 361-run target in their ongoing four-day game. Resuming on 46 for two, UP declared their second innings on 319 for five. In reply, Rajasthan were 15 without loss and needed 346 to win.
Baroda vs MPCA: The Bharghav Bhatt-led attack bowled Baroda to a thumping 246-run win over Madhya Pradesh on the third day of their four-day match. Chasing 337, MP were bundled out for 90 in the second innings. While Bhatt claimed a fiver in the innings, Yusuf Pathan picked three and Ketul Patel took two wickets. Group C
Andhra vs Maharashtra: Resuming their first innings on 196 for three, Maharashtra piled on 440 before being bowled out. 173 by Kedar Jadhav and 95 not-out by captain Rohit Motwani had helped their team to a first-innings lead.
Andhra, who had made 317 in their first innings, were 27 for one and were trailing by 96 runs at stumps on the third day.
Assam vs Himachal: An innings and 221-run victory over Assam gave Himachal Pradesh seven points from the game. Resuming on 97 for six, Assam were bowled out for 161 by the Rishi Dhawan-led attack. Dhawan claimed a five-for in the second innings as well to finish with a 10-wicket haul in the match. While Vikramjeet Malik picked three wickets in the second innings, A Chauhan and V Bhatia took a wicket each.
J&K vs Kerala: With three points ensured on the basis of a first-innings lead if the match ends in a draw, Jammu & Kashmir were leading by 186 runs with nine wickets in hand against Kerala in Jammu at the end of third day’s play. With Adil Rishi batting on 68 and Bandeep Singh on 13 at stumps, the hosts were 111 for one in their second innings.
Earlier, Kerala's lower order had failed to reach double-digit figures leading to the visitors being bowled out for 302 after resuming their first innings on 184 for two.
Goa vs Tripura: Chasing 256 against Goa, Tripura need 184 runs with eight wickets in hand and a day still remaining in the match. KB Pawan was batting on 36 with Y Takawale on 12 at close of play after losing both openers early.
Earlier, Goa were bowled out for 177 in the second innings. Rana Dutta, MB Murasingh, S Majumder and K Acharjee each picked up two wickets, while V Saha took one.
