Sanju Samson, Aparajith slam tons on Day 1
On the back of double-centuries in the first round, Sanju Samson slammed a ton for Kerala, while Baba Aparajith scored a hundred for Tamil Nadu against MPCA in the second round of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 season. Here is the round-up for Day 1:
Group A
Mumbai vs Punjab: Opting bat first, Mumbai were left struggling on 85 for four by Siddharth Kaul, who picked two wickets, while captain Harbhajan Singh claimed Kaustubh Pawar in the 10th over. But veteran batsman Wasim Jaffer, coming in to bat at No.3, revived the Mumbai innings with an unbeaten 92, while Suryakumar Yadav made a useful 44 to help take the team to 207 for five at stumps.
Gujarat vs Delhi: Electing to bat first at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium in Surat, Gujarat were 281 for seven at the end of first day’s play. Y Venugopal Rao scored 107, while Manprit Juneja made fifty on the first day. At stumps, AR Patel (22*) was batting with RV Dhruve (2*).
Jharkhand vs Karnataka: Asked to bat first, Jharkhand made 214 for five before play ended today. Saurabh Tiwary was unbeaten on 43 when play was called off, while R Nemat had made 68 before being dismissed by KP Apanna. The bowler also claimed Bhavi Thaker, while S Arvind has claimed three wickets in Jharkhand’s first innings so far.
Haryana vs Vidarbha: Sunny Singh powered Haryana to 235 for four with a well-complied 101 not-out, while Avi Barot contributed 64. After captain Ajay Jadeja elected to bat first in the four-day encounter, the visitors lost Nitin Saini and Abhimanyu Khod with just 59 runs on the board. However, Barot joined Singh in the middle and the duo added 122, before the former was sent back. And although they lost Rahul Dalal soon after, Haryana were in a comfortable position when play ended. Jayant Yadav was batting on 13 along with Singh when stumps were called.
Group B
Railways vs Saurashtra: After a delayed start due to drizzle and fog at the Jamia Millia Cricket Ground in Delhi, 46 overs of play took place later in the day. The hosts’ captain Shivakant Shukla’s decision to bowl first was rewarded by Anureet Singh, who claimed three wickets in quick succession to leave Saurashtra reeling on 18 for three. And six runs later, K Upadhyay claimed B Chauhan to leave the opposition on 24 for four. However, Aarpit Vasavada and Jaydev Shah set about the task of repairing the innings and took Saurashtra to 88 without losing any more wickets.
UPCA vs Baroda: Skipper Suresh Raina’s 123 helped UPCA to 291 for nine on Day 1, after they opted to bat first at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara. Baroda’s Bhargav Bhatt has claimed a five-for, while U Patel has a four-wicket haul against his name in the innings so far.
Tamil Nadu vs MPCA: S Badrinath was not out on 126, while Baba Aparajith scored 118 for TN on the first day of their game against Madhya Pradesh in Indore. Asked to bat first, TN lost openers KB Arun Karthik and Abhinav Mukund with 53 runs on the board. But the experienced campaigner and the in-form youngster took TN to 293, before Aparajith was sent back by Ishwar Pandey. When play ended, Badrinath was at the crease with Dinesh Karthik, who is yet to open his account.
Rajasthan vs Bengal: 110 not-out by Vineet Saxena took Rajasthan to 222 for six at the end of first day’s play against Bengal. Put in to bat at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, the home team lost Sourabh Chouhan in the first over without a run on the board. But Robin Bist and Saxena took their team to 96, before SS Lahiri struck. After Bist departed for 44 with 96 runs on the board, Saxena rallied on and anchored the innings. He was batting with Ramesh Powar when play ended on day 1.
Group C
Assam vs Hyderabad: An unbeaten 85 by Sibsankar Roy and a valuable 41 by middle-order batsman Tarjinder Singh helped Assam to 181 for five at the end of first day’s play in Guwahati. Hyderabad’s Amol Shinde took three wickets, while TL Suman claimed one scalp to keep Assam on a tight leash.
Kerala vs Andhra: Sanju Samson slammed 115 against Andhra at the Conor Vayal Stadium (Tellicherry in Kannur) after Kerala opted to bat first. Thanks to the youngster’s century and opener N Surendran’s 66, Kerala had scored 236 for the fall of four wickets at stumps on Day 1. When play ended, Robert Fernandez was batting on 39 with Sachin Baby on two.
J&K vs Goa: Visitors Goa made 281 for eight, after electing to bat first in Srinagar. Although they lost wickets early in the innings and were struggling on 80 for four, Amogh Desai’s 71 off 143 balls at the top of the order and KA Vaz’s 99 lower down the order – along with useful contributions from batsmen in the lower-order – helped Goa end the day on a respectable total. SS Bandekar and H Gadekar were batting on 39 and 13 respectively when play ended on the first day.
Tripura vs Himachal: Opting to field first, HP’s Vikramjeet Malik (five wickets) and Rishi Dhawan (four wickets) ran through the Tripura line-up to bowl the home team out for 141. Abhijit Dey top-scored for the hosts with 66 runs, before Malik dismissed him.
In reply, Himachal were 26 for one with Prashant Chopra and Paras Dogra batting on 13 and three respectively.
