Badrinath hits double-ton for TN
Senior Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath scored 248 against MPCA in the second round of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 on Day 2, while Mumbai’s Vishal Dabholkar picked six wickets against Punjab to tip the balance in his team’s favour. Here is the round-up for Day 2:
Group A
Mumbai vs Punjab: A six-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Vishal Dabholkar helped Mumbai take a first-innings lead against Punjab at the Sector 16 Stadium in Chandigarh. The visitors skittled out the Harbhajan Singh-led side for 155, after being bowled out for 282.
When play ended on the second day, Mumbai were 35 without loss in the second innings.
Gujarat vs Delhi: Delhi trail by 125 runs with six wickets in hand on Day 2 against Gujarat. After losing their top four wickets for 49, Mithun Manhas and Manan Sharma revived the Delhi innings and were involved in an unbroken 146-run stand when play ended. Manhas was batting on 85 with Sharma on 59 at stumps.
Earlier in the day, Gujarat were bowled out for 320 after resuming on 281 for seven in the morning.
Jharkhand vs Karnataka: Karnataka bowled Jharkhand out for 364 earlier on Day 2 and were 123 for one when play ended on Friday. They lost opener KL Rahul for 33, while MA Agarwal was unbeaten on 63 with Kunal Kapoor not out on 27 at stumps.
Haryana vs Vidarbha: Playing at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Jamtha, Nagpur, Vidarbha bowled Haryana out for 329 on the second day and were 94 for three when at stumps. J Yadav then claimed three wickets to leave the home team on 63 for three. H K Badani and RS Paradkar were batting on 35 and eight respectively when play was called off.
Group B
Railways vs Saurashtra: After bad weather curtailed first day’s play, Saurashtra were bowled out for 165 on Day 2 of the four-day game. Railways’ Anureet Singh completed his fiver, while Hardik Rathod finished with three scalps in the innings.
In response, Railways were 61 for four at the end of day’s play.
UPCA vs Baroda: Bowled out for 228 in the first innings on the second day, Baroda were trailing by 74 runs at stumps. After UP skipper Suresh Raina removed Aditya Waghmode and Abhimanyu Chauhan, the visitors struck at regular intervals to keep the balance in their favour. Pacer RP Singh claimed four, while Praveen Gupta picked two to help UP take a first-innings lead.
Earlier, UP were bowled out for 302 after resuming their innings on 291 for nine.
Tamil Nadu vs MPCA: S Badrinath scored 248 to take TN to 532 for eight in the first innings. The senior middle-order batsman anchored the innings to help the visitors post a massive total on the board. When stumps were called, lower-order batsman Aswin Crist was batting on 44 with Aushik Srinivas 11.
Rajasthan vs Bengal: Bengal were trailing by 72 runs at the end of day’s play in Jaipur. While the hosts’ opener Vineet Saxena remained unbeaten on 119, the visitors had bowled Rajasthan out for 244 earlier in the day. With WP Saha and S Das in the middle, Bengal were 172 for three at stumps.
Group C
Assam vs Hyderabad: Assam extended their first innings to finish the day on 422 for six, after resuming on their overnight score of 181 for five. SA Roy and Gokul Sharma, who were at the crease at stumps on Day 1, went on to post centuries on the second day. The only batsman to return to the pavilion on Friday, Roy, departed after scoring 134 runs. Sharma was batting on 126 with J Syed Mohammad on 52 when play ended on Day 2.
Kerala vs Andhra: Kerala added 250 runs to their overnight total to post 486 in the first innings in Kannur. Robert Fernandez’s 88 followed by Sachin Baby’s 62 and P Prasanth’s 68 along with valuable contributions from rest of the line-up helped them put up a health first-innings total. DP Vijaykumar, G Shankara Rao and SM Basha claimed three wickets each for Andhra.
In response, Andhra were 42 without loss and trailing by 444 runs at the end of second day’s play.
J&K vs Goa: J&K finished Day 2 on 282 for eight in reply to Goa’s 317 in Srinagar. RN Reshi made 80 for the home team, while Majid Dar scored 58. When stumps were called, Samiullah Beig was batting with Ramdyal Punia.
Earlier in the day, Saurabh Bandekar’s 64 runs lower down the order helped Goa reach a respectable first-innings total before they were bowled out.
Tripura vs Himachal: Tripura were leading by 48 runs with nine wickets in hand in the second innings at the end of second day’s play. Earlier, Himachal Pradesh were bowled for 186 runs in the first innings having taken a 45-run lead. Tripura’s Viki Saha picked a five-for to help wrap the opposition innings on the Friday, while HP skipper Rishi Dhawan made a determined 67 and was the top-scorer for his team.
In reply, Tripura were 93 for one with KB Pawan and Abhijit Dey at the crease when play ended today.
