Himachal secure win over Tripura

Himachal Pradesh were the first to post a win in the second round of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 season. They gained six points from their eight-wicket win over Tripura in their four-day game at Agartala. Here is the round-up for Day 3: Group A Mumbai vs Punjab: As the match heads in to the last day, Punjab need 291 runs and have six wickets in hand to beat Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match in Chandigarh. Resuming their second innings on 35 for no loss on Day 3, Mumbai were bowled out for 271, thus setting a 399-run target for the hosts. While Kaustubh Pawar made 42, Suryakumar Yadav scored 62 and Javed Khan contributed 44* lower down the order, the rest of the line-up returned without substantial contributions. Punjab’s Rajwinder Singh finished with a five-for in the innings, while Harbhajan Singh picked four to wrap up the opposition. In reply, Punjab were 108 for four with Yuvraj Singh and Udit Kaul in the middle. Gujarat vs Delhi: Having bowled Delhi out for 295, Gujarat had seized a first-innings lead on the penultimate day of the match. Akshar Patel claimed six wickets, while Jesal Karia had picked three and Rakesh Dhruve took one to help bowl the opposition out. When stumps were called on Day 3, Gujarat were 89 for four in the second innings with a lead of 114. Smit Patel was batting with captain Parthiv Patel. Delhi’s Sumit Narwal, who had claimed six wickets in Gujarat’s first innings, had already picked two, while Parwinder Awana sent back Venugopal Rao and Vikas Mishra accounted for Samit Gohel. Jharkhand vs Karnataka: Resuming their innings on 123 for one, Karnataka posted 424 for seven before declaring their innings with a 60-run first-innings lead on Day 3. When play ended, Jharkhand were four without loss. Haryana vs Vidarbha: Having bowled hosts Vidarbha out for 287, Haryana had secured a first-innings lead on the penultimate day of the match. Jayant Yadav claimed five wickets, while Mohit Sharma and YS Chahal picked two apiece and Harshal Patel chipped in with one wicket. The visitors were 29 for two and leading by 71 runs when play ended on Saturday. Group B Railways vs Saurashtra: Saurashtra were leading by 44 runs with eight wickets in hand in the second innings. However, Railways, bowled out for 175 on the third day, had gained a 10-run first-innings lead. Mahesh Rawat’s 62 and Murali Kartik’s unbeaten 43 lower down the order helped the team take a first-innings lead in the four-day game. UPCA vs Baroda: Chasing a target of 369 runs, Baroda lost openers SP Wakaskar and Aditya Waghmode with just three runs on board. They were trailing by 364 runs with eight wickets in hand at stumps. Earlier, Tanmay Srivastava’s 125 along with Suresh Raina (65) and Mukul Dagar (63) helped UP to 294 before declaring the second innings. Udit Patel had taken three wickets, while Bhargav Bhatt picked two and Yusuf Pathan accounted for one. Tamil Nadu vs MPCA: Facing TN’s mammoth score of 532 for eight declared, MPCA were 221 for seven at the end of third day’s play. Aushik Srinivas claimed three, while L Balaji sent back two and S Sam dismissed one to put TN in an advantageous position. With only a day remaining in the match, TN will be looking to secure a first-innings lead. Rajasthan vs Bengal: Resuming on the overnight score of 172 for three, Bengal scored 326 before being bowled out and seized a first-innings lead against Rajasthan. In reply, Rajasthan were 62 for one when play ended on Day 3. Group C Assam vs Hyderabad: After Assam declared their first innings on 501 for nine early on the third day, Hyderabad were trailing by 283 runs with six wickets in hand when play ended. Facing a stiff target, Hyderabad openers TL Suman and Akshath laid a solid foundation with a 135-run partnership, until the latter was sent back by Arlen Konwar for 39. Suman, who was the more dominant partner, struck 126 to take the team to 201 before returning to the dressing room. When play ended, BP Sandeep was batting on eight, while Amol Shinde was yet to open his account. Kerala vs Andhra: Andhra played through the third day of the four-day game against Kerala and reduced the deficit to 198 runs. Having lost three wickets for 288 runs in the first innings, the AG Pradeep-led Andhra side will be looking to take a first-innings lead when they come to the crease on the last day of the match. When stumps were called, MUB Sriram was batting on 82 with Amol Muzumdar on 10. J&K vs Goa: Visitor’s Goa bowled J&K out for 302 on Day 3 to take a 15-run lead on the third day of the match. Shadab Jakati claimed five, while HH Gadekar and MG Gawas took two wickets each to help their team seize a first-innings lead. Building on the lead, they then went on to post 245 for nine by the end of day’s play in Srinagar. Although they lost three wickets quickly and were reduced to 50 for three, their middle-order batsmen Ravikant Shukla (46) and KA Vaz (50) helped stabilise the innings. When stumps were called, Goa were leading by 260 runs with one wicket in hand. Tripura vs Himachal: Himachal Pradesh cruised to an eight-wicket win over Tripura on the penultimate day of their game at the Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium in Agartala. Bipul Sharma and Rishi Dhawan ran through the Tripura line-up in the second innings on the third day to bundle the home team out for 188 after resuming on the overnight score of 93 for one. Vikramjeet Malik and Abhinav Bali pitched in with a wicket each to help claim nine wickets for 95 runs on Saturday. HP opener Prashant Chopra then led the 144-run chase with an unbeaten 84 to help seal a comprehensive win.
