The much talked about game of the first round of Ranji Trophy 2013-14 between Haryana and Mumbai witnessed Sachin Tendulkar come out to bat for Mumbai but walk back after scoring just five runs and also saw veteran Ajay Jadeja make a comeback to the domestic circuit. In another Group A match, Punjab captain Harbhajan Singh claimed six wickets against Odisha to tip the balance in his team’s favour. Here is the round-up for Day 1 of the first round:

Group A

Haryana vs Mumbai: Mumbai were trailing by 34 runs with six wickets in hand. Opting to field first at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium, the Zaheer Khan-led team bowled the hosts out for 134 in the first innings. While the captain claimed one wicket, Abhishek Nayar continuing in his good form picked four for 38 and Javed Khan took two. In reply the visitors lost opener Kaustubh Pawar, Wasim Jaffer, Sachin Tendulkar and Nayar on Day 1. Veteran batsman Sachin Tendulkar was castled for five by Haryana pacer Mohit Sharma. When stumps were called Ajinkya Rahane was batting on 44 with Dhawal Kulkarni on 1.

Odisha vs Punjab: After electing to field and bowling Odisha out for 205 at the PCA Stadium, Punjab were trailing by 194 runs in their first innings. Punjab skipper Harbhajan Singh scripted the opposition’s downfall with a six-wicket haul, while Sandeep Sharma claimed two.

In response openers Jiwanjot Singh and Ravi Inder Singh had taken the team to 11 when play ended.

Vidarbha vs Gujarat: The Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground witnessed the hosts being skittled out for a paltry 85 after Gujarat opted to field. Including opener Akshay Kolhar, five Vidrabha batsmen returned to the dressing room without opening their accounts. Gujarat’s Rush Kalaria claimed five, while Jasprit Bumrah picked four as they ran through the home team’s line-up in 32.4 overs.

In reply Gujarat has posted 153 for three with Smit Patel scoring 73 before being trapped lbw by Sumit Ruikar, who also removed the key wicket of Manprit Juneja.

Jharkhand vs Delhi: No play

Group B

Saurashtra vs Rajasthan: Sagar Jogiyani propelled Saurashtra to 226 for two on the first day with an unbeaten 114-run knock after Jaydev Shah elected to bat on the home ground. Shitanshu Kotak made 65 as the duo put together a 136-run opening stand until he was removed by Aristh Singhvi. The bowler also dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara for 21.

Tamil Nadu vs SSCB: TN’s middle-order bat Baba Aparajith slammed an unbeaten century to take his team to 220 for three against Services. The youngster who has been in sublime form was not-out on 109 with Dinesh Karthik on 11 when play ended.

MPCA vs Railways: Put in to bat by Railways, MPCA opener Satyam Choudhary took his team to 282 for three with an unbeaten 127-run knock. He was ably supported by middle-order bat Mohnish Mishra who was sent back three runs short of his ton by KV Sharma.

Bengal vs Baroda: Due to wet pitch and unfavourable ground conditions, the match was called off at 10.30 a.m.

Group C

Hyderabad vs Andhra Pradesh: With only 20 overs being bowled at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad made 44 for the loss of two wickets after being inserted to bat for AP. TL Suman and GH Vihari were batting on 12 and three respectively when play was called off.

Tripura vs Maharashtra: After losing the top and middle order early, after being asked to bat, No.6 batsman Yogesh Takawale’s rescued Tripura with an unbeaten 105. He was ably supported by lower-order batsman Timir Chanda, who contributed a valuable 43, before he was sent back by Shrikant Mundhe. The bowler finished the day with three scalps, while Akshay Darekar took two wickets.

Assam vs Kerala: Opting to field first, Kerala struck at regular intervals to keep Assam at 177 for five at the end of Day 1 in Guwahati.

Himachal vs Goa: With only 27 overs bowled at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, the home team was 136 for two when play was called off. Paras Dogra and Abhinav Bali were batting on 45 and 43 respectively when stumps were called.
