Aparajith, Dogra, Choudhary strike double tons
Baba Aparajith scored a double century for Tamil Nadu against services, while Paras Dogra made 208 not-out for Himachal Pradesh and MP’s Satyam Choudhary anchored the Madhya Pradesh innings with 239 not-out in the first round of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14. Here is the round-up for Day 2 of the first round:
Group A
Haryana vs Mumbai: Haryana took a massive 222-run lead and had one wicket in hand in the second innings at the end of second day’s play.
The hosts claimed Mumbai’s remaining six wickets for 36 runs earlier in the day. Joginder Sharma claimed four of the opposition’s wickets, including that of Ajinkya Rahane for 51, to finish with a fiver in the innings, while Harshal Patel took two to wrap up the innings. In response, the Haryana batsmen went on to make 224 for the loss of nine wickets with Sunny Singh scoring 63, while Jayant Yadav contributed 45 and Rahul Dewan made 44. Mumbai captain Zaheer Khan and Vishal Dabholkar took four wickets apiece.
Odisha vs Punjab: Taruwar Kohli and Mandeep Singh powered Punjab to 306 for the loss of two wickets with well-compiled centuries. While Kohli was unbeaten on 109, Singh was batting on 116 at stumps on Day 2.
Vidarbha vs Gujarat: Although they were trailing by 132 runs in the second innings, the Vidarbha batsmen had a better outing in their second innings having made 87 for one when stumps were called on the second day. The hosts had bowled Gujarat out for 304 in the afternoon with Shrikant Wagh taking a four-for and Sumit Ruikar finishing the innings with three scalps. Parthiv Patel made 65 for the visitors.

Group B
Saurashtra vs Rajasthan: Resuming on 226 for two, Saurashtra took their first innings score to 475 for the loss of seven wickets on the second day. Opener Sagar Jogiyani was castled for 133 by veteran spinner Ramesh Powar after adding 19 runs to his overnight score. The bowler finished the day with a four-for. While the rest of the line-up made useful contributions, lower-order batsman, C.S. Jani made 64, while Aarpit Vasavada was dismissed one run short of his half-century.
Tamil Nadu vs SSCB: Baba Aparajith scored a double ton to help his team to a mammoth 456. After the visitors declared their first innings later in the day, Services were 17 without loss when stumps were called.
MPCA vs Railways: An unbeaten double century by Satyam Choudhary propelled Madhya Pradesh to 510 for six, before they declared their first innings. The opener was ably supported by Devendra Bundela (66) on Day 2 as they continued to strengthen the team’s position. In reply Railways were 46 for one at the end of day’s play with Shivakant Shukla on 17 and Amit Paunikar yet to open his account.
Bengal vs Baroda: No play due to wet ground conditions.
Group C
Hyderabad vs Andhra Pradesh: AP were trailing by 185 runs with all wickets intact after bowling Hyderabad out in the first innings earlier in the day.
After only 20 overs of play on the first day, a well-compiled 75 by GH Vihari and half-century by Amol Shinde helped Hyderabad to 221 on the second day.
Assam vs Kerala: Bowled out for 323 after resuming on 177 for five, Niraj Patel’s 82 and J Syed Mohammad’s 40 helped Tripura to a respectable score in the first innings. In response Kerala were 119 for three with Sanju Samson batting on 46 with PU Anthaf (1) when stumps were called at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
Himachal vs Goa: Paras Dogra’s 208 not-out, after resuming on his overnight score of 45, helped his team to 543 for five against Goa in the first innings. The middle-order bat held up one end as the home team laid a strong total to set up the game. He found able support from Rishi Dhawan who made 89, while BB Sharma was batting on 86 when play ended today.
