Summary
Maharashtra coast to 10-wicket win
Maharashtra beat Bengal to enter the Final of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 season. Wriddhiman Saha’s 108 went in vain as the Samad Fallah-led attack helped pull off a comprehensive win in three days. Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, Karun Nair scored a century to tip the balance in Karnataka’s favour. Here is the round-up for Day 3: Bengal vs Maharashtra: With a thumping 10-wicket win in three days, Maharashtra have secured themselves a place in the Ranji Trophy 2013-14 final. They had last reached the final of the premier domestic tournament in 1992-93 when they had lost to Punjab at the final hurdle. The Maharashtra pacers set up the memorable win in the semi-final clash against Bengal. Fallah, Anupam Sanklecha and Dominic Joseph Muthuswami picked three wickets each, while Akshay Darekar took one to bowl Bengal out for 348 in the second innings. Although Wriddhiman Saha's determined century, supported by the lower order, helped Bengal avoid an innings defeat, it could not salvage the game after a poor first-innings (114 runs) performance. Maharashtra then reached the eight-run target in 12 balls. Karnataka vs Punjab: Karnataka had taken an 81-run first-innings lead and had five wickets in hand at stumps on the third day against Punjab. When play was called off, Karnataka were 351 for five with Karun Nair (107*) and Amit Verma (65*) still at the crease. Resuming on 39 for two, Karnataka had surpassed Bengal's first-innings score of 270 by tea on Monday. By the end of the second session, they had secured a nine-run lead thanks to Karun Nair who was ably supported by Amit Verma. Earlier in the day, Robin Uthappa was sent back by Harbhajan Singh who also removed CM Gautam later. Sandeep Sharma had accounted for Manish Pandey (65). Nair continued to rally on, and along with Verma, he took the team to a position of strength. Their partnership was worth 110 at the end of day’s play.
