Pacers fire Maharashtra into the semis
Anupam Sanklecha (4/19), Samad Fallah, DJ Muthuswamy and Shrikant Mundhe bowled Maharashtra into the semi-finals of Ranji Trophy 2014-15. Akhil Herwadkar(161) and Shreyas Iyer (82) put Mumbai in an advantageous position on the third day against Delhi in Cuttack. Karnataka bowled Assam out for a paltry 185 but did not enforce the follow-on and continued to the pile the runs. Tamil Nadu were comfortably placed against Vidarbha at stumps. Here are the highlights for the day: Andhra vs Maharashtra: Maharashtra beat Andhra by 75 runs to advance to the semi-finals. The Rohit Motwani-led side put up a better performance in the second innings after being bowled out for 91 in the first. Lifted by Kedar Jadhav's 81 followed by R Tripathi's 43, Maharashtra set the opposition a 177-run target. After resuming on 172/6 on the third morning, Maharashtra lost Jadhav in the first over of the morning. Tripathi, who had retired hurt on Day-two without opening his account, however, came out to bat and took the side to 223 before being sent back by Siva Kumar. The pacer then accounted for Samad Fallah to wrap up the innings in the same over and finish with 6/79 in the innings. Maharashtra's pace quartet - Fallah, Anupam Sanklecha, DJ Muthuswamy and Shrikant Mundhe then skittled Andhra out for 101 to bowl the side to victory. Sanklecha, who gave the side their first breakthrough, claimed three more while the other three bowlers picked two wickets each. Assam vs Karnataka: Karnataka were leading by 404 with eight wickets in hand in the second innings when play ended. Assam were bowled out for 185 in the first innings after resuming on 58/3 on the third morning. Gokul Sharma was the top-scorer for the side with 58. Sreenath Aravind and Shreyas Gopal picked three wickets apiece while Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun took two each to bowl the defending champions to a 267-run lead. However, Karnataka did not enforce the follow-on and were 137/2 at stumps. Lokesh Rahul made 73 before being sent back by J Syed Mohammed. And while Manish Pandey was castled for zero by Krishna Das, Samarth R rallied on until the end of day's play. At close of play the opener was batting on 54 with Robin Uthappa on six. Delhi vs Mumbai: Mumbai were leading by 366 runs in the second innings with three wickets in hand at the end of day’s play. Propelled by Akhil Herwadkar's 161 and Shreyas Iyer's 82, the side were in a commanding position at 376/7 when play ended for the day. While Wilkin Mota was dismissed for 15 by Manan Sharma at the stroke of stumps, Siddhesh Lad was batting on 41. After the departure of the opener, wickets fell at regular intervals. Manan Sharma halted Herwadkar's run in the middle and claimed the key wickets of Suryakumar Yadav and Nikhil Patil while Sumit Narwal accounted for Abhishek Nayar. Tamil Nadu vs Vidarbha: Vidarbha were trailing by 197 runs with four wickets in hand at the end of day's play. Resuming their innings on nine, the side were 206/6 at stumps in reply to TN's 403. Aswin Crist claimed three while P Parameswaran, L Balaji and Malolan Rangaraja took a wicket each. R Jangid was batting on 26 at close of play in Jaipur on Wednesday.
