Yuvraj ton puts Punjab in commanding position

Yuvraj Singh’s century helped Punjab to take first innings lead against Maharashtra on the second day of the round three of Ranji Trophy 2014-15. In another match, MP pushed TN on the backfoot courtesy Devendra Bundela’s ton and Ankit Sharma’s four-for. Mumbai’s Shardul Thakur claimed six wickets against UP while Joginder Sharma too was amongst wickets in Lahli. Here are the highlights for the day: Group A Baroda vs J&K: Baroda were trailing by 381 runs with all wickets intact after bowling J&K out for 497. J&K captain, Parvez Rasool went on to score 136 after resuming on 65 on the second morning while lower-order batsman Ram Day made an unbeaten 124 to lift the team to a big total in the first innings. In reply, Baroda openers Saurab Wakaskar (60*) and Kedar Devdhar (54*) have got the team off to a good start and taken the team to 116 for no loss at stumps. Railways vs Karnataka: At stumps on Day 2, Railways were trailing by 142 runs with six wickets in hand in the first innings in reply to Karnataka's 247. K Upadhaya returned with a seven-wicket haul as the hosts wrapped-up the visitors’ innings earlier in the day. Karnataka's Abhimanyu Mithun then removed opener R Bhosale while Stuart Binny claimed two more and Manish Pandey sent back Railways' half-centurion A Kaushik later in the day. Tamil Nadu vs Madhya Pradesh: In addition to Jalaj Saxena’s century, Devendra Bundela scored 104 to help MP to a mammoth 432 before being bowled out on the second day in Chennai. Both batsmen were sent back by TN’s M Rangarajan who returned with seven wickets in the innings. MP’s Ankit Sharma then claimed four wickets upfront to leave the hosts reeling on 85/4. When play ended TN were 112/4 with Abhinav Mukund and R Prasanna at the crease. Uttar Pradesh vs Mumbai: Resuming on 115/1 UP were bowled out for 206 earlier in the day. Shardul Thakur claimed 6/53 while Kshemal Waingankar picked two and Wilkin Mota and Abhisek Nayar chipped in with a wicket each to help bowl out the hosts on the second day. However, the visitors too lost early wickets and were reeling on 39/3. Amit Mishra removed the openers while Ankit Rajpoot sent back Abhishek Nayar. At stumps, Mumbai were 42/3 with Hiken Shah on 14 and Suryakumar Yadav yet to open his account. Group B Delhi vs Rajasthan: Opener Unmukt Chand led Delhi to a 60-run lead against Rajasthan in Delhi. After the hosts lost Varun Sood for the addition of 12 runs to their overnight total of ten, Virender Sehwag joined the opener in reviving the innings. The Chand-Sehwag pair took Delhi to 150 until S Ghelot sent back the senior batsman. Chand continued to anchor the innings and was batting on 87 with Mithun Manhas on 34 when play ended on the second day. Haryana vs Vidarbha: Joginder Sharma claimed 5/46 to bowl Vidarbha out for 154 on Day 2. After resuming on 101/3, Vidarbha lost seven wickets for 53 runs earlier in the day. Ashish Hooda claimed three while Mohit Sharma chipped in with one wicket to warp-up the opposition in 68.3 overs. In reply, the home team were 60/2 with Nitin Saini and night watchman Mohit in the middle. Maharashtra vs Punjab: Yuvraj Singh's 136 of 160 balls helped Punjab to a solid first innings lead against hosts Maharashtra in Pune. At stumps, the visitors were 370 for eight with a comfortable 160-run lead. Samad Fallah claimed two wickets while Anupam Sanklecha picked three wickets for Maharashtra. Saurashtra vs Gujarat: Smit Patel's 105 helped Gujarat to a 41-run lead before being bowled out for 248 in the first innings on the second day. Dharmendrasinh Jadeja-led Saurashtra attack struck at regular intervals to keep to prevent partnerships from blossoming but the middle-order batsman's valiant knock helped the visitors to a respectable total. Jadeja claimed 5/74 while K Makvana picked two and S Tyagi and S Trivedi picked a wicket each. Group C Goa vs Himachal Pradesh: At the end of Day 2, HP were trailing by 185 runs with seven wickets in hand. HP then lost Raghav Dhawan with three runs on the board but Ankush Bains and Ankit Kalsi helped rally on. Gauresh Gawas struck to end the partnership. He claimed the opener and followed up with the wicket for Paras Dogra but missed out on a hattrick. Kalsi was batting on 66 with Rashmi Parida on 55 at stumps. Earlier, significant contributions by the lower middle-order helped Goa to 357 in the first innings before being bowled out on Day 2. Jharkhand vs Tripura: Resuming their first innings on 72/2, Tripura were 227/6 and had taken a 85-run lead at the end of second day's play against Jharkhand. Bishal Gosh's 76 along with useful contributions from the middle-order helped the team take a first innings lead in the match. At stumps Abhijit Dey and Kaushal Acharjee were batting on 22 and 16 respectively. Kerala vs Hyderabad: At 179/6, Kerala were trailing by 91 runs with four wickets in hand in reply to Hyderabad's 270 in the first innings. Earlier, in the morning Kerala claimed the three remaining Hyderabad wickets for 15 runs to bowl out the opposition. The Sachin Baby-led side then kept losing wickets at regular intervals after losing opener VA Jagdeesh in the second over of the day. KB Pawan was the only batsman to score a half-century as Ravi Kiran and Ashish Reddy struck to end partnerships. The bowlers claimed two wickets each while Pragyan Ojha and Syed Quadri took a wicket apiece. When play ended, Baby was batting on 41 with KS Monish on three. Services vs Andhra: Deepak Punia and Roshan Raj claimed four wickets each to bowl Andhra out for 234 after resuming on 160/3 on the second day. While Raj had dealt the early blows, Punia ran through the lower-order. In reply Services were 53/1 at stumps with S Chatterjee and Aman Sharma at the crease.
