Andhra, Jharkhand post wins
Jharkhand cruised to a nine-wicket win against Services while Andhra Pradesh registered an innings and 136-run win on the Day 3 of the last round of the Ranji Trophy 2014-15 league phase. Highlights of the day: Group A Baroda vs Tamil Nadu: With a day remaining in the game, TN need 156 runs to win with nine wickets in hand. Resuming on 73/3, Baroda were bowled out for 245 in the second innings. Lower-order bat Swapnil Singh was the highest run-getter for the side with 83. L Balaji picked three while Aswin Crist and P Parameswaran took two wickets each. Chasing 207, TN were 51/1 at stumps with Murali Vijay and B Aparajith in the middle. Madhya Pradesh vs Bengal: The Yogesh Rawat-led attack bowled Bengal out for 219 to enforce the follow-on. Rawat claimed 5/65 while Avesh Khan picked 3/39 to bowl the side out. Amit Banerjee was left stranded on 41. However, the visitors fared better batting again and were 111/1 at stumps with Abhishek Das (69*) and S Chatterjee (7*) at the crease. Mumbai vs Karnataka: Mumbai secured three points with a narrow first innings lead against Karnataka in the all-important last game of the league phase and at stumps on Day 3 were still in the reckoning for a place in the knock-outs. (The result of the other matches in Group A will have a bearing on Mumbai reaching the quarter-finals.) After the end of the fourth wicket stand for 136, the Vinay Kumar-led side lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 415. Opener R Samarth who had kept the innings on course was sent back for 180 by Harmeet Singh early in the last session triggering a collapse. With six wickets, the spinner was instrumental in the hosts seizing a 21-run lead to keep the side in the race for a berth in the next phase. At the end of day’s play Mumbai were leading by 40 runs with all wickets intact. Railways vs Uttar Pradesh: Resuming on 266/7 on the third day, UP were bowled out 292 earlier in the day. E Dwivedi (42) and Piyush Chawala (73) rallied on but the side conceded the first innings lead as R Mali ran through the lower-order. The bowler picked 5/66. The Chawala-led attack then skittled Railways out for 189. Chawala picked 5/67 in the effort while RP Singh and K yadav took two wickets each. Chasing 243, UP were 25 without loss at the end of day's play. Group B Gujarat vs Haryana: Gujarat coasted to a nine-wicket win inside two days. Maharashtra vs Vidarbha: Resuming their second innings on 26 after being asked to follow-on on the second day, Vidarbha were 274/6 at stumps. Although they lost the top-order to DJ Muthuswamy, S Shrivastava and R Jangid rebuilt the innings. When played ended for the day, U Patel was batting on 44 with S Wagh on 23. Odisha vs Saurashtra: Resuming on 64/6, Saurashtra were bowled out for 152 in the second innings. B Mohanty , D Behera and A Mangaraj took three wickets each. Chasing 283, Odisha were 128/2 at stumps with Govind Podder (41*) and Anurag Sarangi (49*) at the crease. Punjab vs Delhi: With a 90-run win against Punjab, Delhi continue to top the Group B table. Resuming on 48/0, the visitors were bowled out earlier in the day for 192. Sandeep Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Gurkeerat Singh claimed three wickets each. But chasing 179, the Manan Sharma-led attack bundled Punjab out for 88. While Sharma took 5/31, Varun Sood picked 2/40 and Shivan Sharma and S Narwal took a wicket each. Group C Andhra Pradesh vs Goa: Andhra posted a comprehensive innings and 136-run win against Goa. Resuming on 187/8 Goa were bowled out for 198 and asked to follow-on. They were then bowled 214 in the second innings. Siva Kumar picked 5/38 while Stephen took 3/70 to take Andhra to victory. Hyderabad vs Himachal Pradesh: Hyderabad were trailing by 214 runs with nine wickets in hand at the end of day's play. Resuming on 36 without loss they lost the wicket of PA Reddy during the day. Opener Tanmay Agarwal was batting on 105 with GH Vihari on 138 at stumps. Jharkhand vs Services: Jharkhand claimed a comprehensive nine-wicket win against Services on the third day. S Quadri claimed 6/102 to bowl Services out for 235 in the second innings. Lower middle-order bat Yashpal Singh scored 51 while No. 9 bat, Saurabh Kumar made 65 to make Jharkhand bat again. The side then chased down the 79-run target in 12.1 overs for the loss of Ishan Kishan's wicket. Kerala vs Assam: After resuming on 52/4, Kerala were bowled out for 266. Amit Verma's 142 helped lift the side to a respectable score despite little support from the other end. P Das claimed 4/74 while J Syed Mohammad took 3/56 to bowl Assam to a first innings lead. Assam were 26 without loss at the end of day's play.
