Karnakata, Delhi bowled out for low scores

The first day of the 2015-16 season of the Ranji Trophy saw defending champions Karnataka bowled out for 187 by Assam and Delhi skittled out for a paltry 138 by Team Rajasthan. Assam’s J Syed Mohammed starred in the hosts show with a seven-wicket haul while in Jaipur Deepak Chahar claimed a five-for to push the Gautam Gambhir-led side on the back-foot. In the match played in Chennai, Tamil Nadu were bundled out for 125 by Bhagav Bhatt and Yusuf Pathan, who claimed four wickets apiece. Meanwhile, Diwesh Pathania claimed six while Raushan Raj picked three to bowl Jharkhand out for 45 in the Group C match in Delhi and put Services in a dominating position.

Here are the highlights for the day: Group A Assam vs Karnataka: Defending champions Karnataka were bowled out for 187 by Assam in Guwahati after electing to bat. The Syed Mohammed-led attack bowled out the visiting team in 75.2 overs in their tournament opener. The left-arm spinner claimed seven for 44 to give the hosts an upper hand in the game. At 21 for one, Assam were trailing by 166 runs at stumps with Pallav Kumar Das (15*) and Gokul Sharma (2*) at the crease in Guwahati. Maharashtra vs Haryana: Centurion HJ Rana powered Haryana to 303 for six at stumps after being left reeling on 32 for three by Samad Fallah in Pune. The middle-order bat was batting on 138 with JJ Yadav on 22 when play ended. Virender Sehwag made 92 before being sent back by Shrikant Mundhe earlier in the day. Team Rajasthan vs Delhi: After bundling out Delhi for 138 in Jaipur, Rajasthan were trailing by 64 runs with seven wickets in hand at stumps. Deepak Chahar claimed five for 60 while Dey picked three for 26 to wrap-up the visitor’s first innings. They then lost Vineet Saxena and Ankit Lamba to Sumit Narwal early in the innings while Pranay Sharma was later removed by Pradeep Sangwan for 42. At the end of day's play Ashok Menaria was batting on 19 with Puneet Yadav on two as he took Rajasthan to 74 for three. Vidarbha vs Odisha: Electing to bat, Vidarbha were lifted to 256 for six by opening batsman A Shanware who scored a well-compiled 119. Basant Mohanty and S Pradhan claimed two wickets apiece while Deepak Behera and J Behera claimed a wicket each. When play ended for the day, R Jangaid was batting on 22 with S Wagh was unbeaten on one against Odisha in Nagpur. Group B Andhra Pradesh vs Mumbai: Left reeling on 18 for two by the Mumbai pacers after electing to bat, Andhra finsihed the day on 170 for two in 80 overs. Mohammad Kaif was batting on 66 with Ricky Bhui on 91 when play was called off in Vizianagaram. Punjab vs Railways: Electing to bat in Mohali, Punjab were comfortably poised on 235 for two at stumps against Railways. The hosts lost Manan Vohra with eight runs on the board and were 57 for two after the departure of Jiwanjot Singh. However, Uday Kaul (92*) and Mandeep Singh (100*) built a solid partnership to take the team to stumps in an unbroken stand. Tamil Nadu vs Baroda: At 33 for one, Baroda were trailing by 92 runs after bowling TN out for 125 earlier in the day. Electing to bat after a rain delayed start in Chennai the hosts succumbed to the Baroda spinners in 57.4 overs. Bhatt and Yusuf claimed four wickets each to tip the balance in the visitors favour. When play was called off, Baroda's Kedar Jadhav and Aditya Waghmode were batting on 17 and four, respectively. Uttar Pradesh vs Madhya Pradesh: Propelled by opener Almas Shaukat's century UP were 260 for two at the end of day's play. Tanmay Srivastava (75) and Himanshu Asnora were the only batsmen to return to the pavilion after UP opted to bat against MP. At stumps, Shaukat was batting on 110 with Mohammad Saif on 34 in Moradabad. Group C Goa vs Hyderabad: Hyderabad were 246 for five when bad light stopped play in Goa. Akshath Reddy's 61 and GH Vihari's 82 were the top scores for the visiting team on the first day. At stumps, B Anirudh was batting on 24 with Akash Bhandari on 15. J & K vs Kerala: Parvez Rasool's 54 and Bandeep Singh's 50* helped J & K to modest 247 for seven on the first day. Electing to bat first the hosts lost wickets at regular intervals to Kerala. Nidheesh MD, Ahamed Farzeen and Raiphi Vincet Gomez claimed two wickets each for the visitors. At stumps, Bandeep was batting with Waseem Raza (26*) in Srinagar. Saurashtra vs Tripura: Ravindra Jadeja and Sheldon Jackson revived the Saurashtra innings in Rakjot after the hosts were left tottering on 94 for four by Abjijit Dey and TS Saha earlier in the day. The middle-order batsmen took the team to 240 until the right-arm Tripura pacer struck again to end the stand. Jadeja was sent back for 91, while Arpit Vasavada was run out 14 runs later. With Jackson batting on 82 and Chirag Jani on three, Suarashtra were 270 for six when play ended for the day. Services vs Jharkhand: Pathania claimed six for 19 while Raj picked three for 14 to bundle Jharkhand out for 45 at the Palam Ground in Delhi after opting to field in their season opener. The hosts were then leading by 86 runs with a wicket in hand at the end of day's play. With three ducks in their line-up, Services were 131 for nine at stumps. When play ended on Day 1, Raj was batting on seven with PS Poonia on nine.
