SSCB’s Pathania claims seven against Jharkhand
On Day 2 of the first round of Ranji Trophy 2015-16, Vidarbha were propelled to a respectable total by Umesh Yadav’s 128 against Odihsa. In a high-scoring game, Uttar Pradesh’s Mohammed Saif missed out on a double-century by two runs while Sarfaraz Khan made 155 against Madhya Pradesh. Services’ Diwesh Pathania, who had claimed six wickets in the first innings. then returned with seven for 64 in the second against Jharkhand. Here are the highlights for the day:
Group A
Assam vs Karnataka: Assam secured a marginal seven-run lead before being bowled out for 194 earlier in the day. After resuming on 21 for one Pallav Kumar Das and Gokul Sharma added 70 runs to the overnight score until both were sent back off successive overs by J Suchith and Karun Nair respectively. Amit Verma then kept the team in the fray with 57 even as wickets crumbled at the other end. The rest of the line-up caved in to the Vinay Kumar-led attack. R Smarath and Mayank Agarwal then took Karnataka to stumps at 77 without loss in the second innings. The visitors were leading by 70 runs at the end of day's play. Maharashtra vs Haryana: Maharashtra were trailing by 328 runs in their first innings with all wickets intact in reply to Haryana's 335. With the hosts on seven for one, Swapnil Gugale and Harshad Khadiwale were at the crease when play ended for the day. Earlier, after resuming on 303 for six, Haryana's first innings was wrapped up by Nikit Dhumal and Dominic Muthuswamy. Team Rajasthan vs Delhi: Delhi were leading by 74 runs with nine wickets in hand at stumps in Jaipur. The visitors were 176 for one in the second innings after bowling Team Rajasthan out for 240 in the first innings earlier in the day. Earlier, resuming 74 for three in Jaipur, the hosts were helped to a good first innings lead by Dishant Yagnik (40) and Deepak Chahar (50). Putting up a better performance in the second outing, Unmukt Chand posted 84 before being sent back. When play ended for the day, Gautam Gambhir was batting on 77 with Pradeep Sangwan on six. Vidarbha vs Odisha: Odisha were trailing by 388 runs with eight wickets in hand at stumps. Govind Podder and Anurag Sarangi had taken the team to 79 for two at the end of day's play in reply to Vidarbha's first innings total of 467.
Earlier, after resuming on 256 for six, Vidarbha were propelled to a big total by Yadav's unbeaten century lower down the order before being bowled out. Group B Andhra Pradesh vs Mumbai: Andhra were 213 for four at stumps after resuming on 170 for two in the morning. Ricky Bhui, who was nine short of his century at close of play yesterday, made 103 before being Balwinder Singh Sandhu earlier in the day. The pacer also castled AG Pradeep for naught in next over. When play was called off Mohammad Kaif was batting on 89 with Ashwin Hebber on eight. Punjab vs Railways: At 14 without loss in the first innings, Railways were trailing by 590 runs in reply to Punjab's 604 for five. Resuming their first innings on 235 for two in the morning in Mohali, the hosts lost centurion Mandeep Singh and was followed back by Uday Kaul a few overs later. While Mandeep was bowled by Ranjit Mali for 109, Kaul who was eight short of his century when he came back to bat in the morning was run out for 112. Nine runs later Yuvraj Singh was sent back by Karn Sharma, but Gurkeerat Singh Mann and Gitansh Khera continued to pile on runs. Mann was on 201 while Khera was on 102 when Punjab declared their first innings. Saurabh Wakaskar and ARB Singh were at the crease when play ended for the day. Tamil Nadu vs Baroda: Baroda secured a narrow 34-run first innings lead before being bowled out for 159 earlier in the day. Resuming on 33 for one, Kedar Jadhav's 40 and Yusuf Pathan's 41 in the middle-order were the only substantial contributions for the visitors as Rahil Shah and DT Chandrasekar ran through the line-up. Both claimed four wickets each. The Borada bowlers then bundled TN out for 155 in the second innings. Swapnil Singh claimed Abhinav Mukund off the second ball of the second innings to set the ball rolling. Bhargav Bhatt then claimed six for 58 as he ran through the hosts’ batting line-up. Chasing 122, Baroda were four without loss with Kedar Jadhav and Hitesh Solanki in the middle when play was called off. Uttar Pradesh vs Madhya Pradesh: UP continued to pile on runs on the second day and were 656 for five at stumps after resuming on 250 for two. While Almas Shuakat (128) was sent back by Jalaj Saxena after adding 18 runs to his overnight score. Saif however went to make 198 before being caught by the bowler off his own bowling. Sarfaraz Khan too scored 155 before Saxena disrupted his stumps. When play ended for the day Eklavya Dwivedi and Piyush Chawla were batting on 28 and 25 respectively. Group C Goa vs Hyderabad: At 34 for one, Goa were trailing by 291 runs in the first innings at stumps with Swapnil Asnodar and RR Singh in the middle. Earlier, after resuming on 246 for five, the visitors were 325 for nine at the end of their first innings. Habeeb Ahmed had retired hurt while Sudeep Tyagi remained not out on four. J & K vs Kerala: Kerala were trailing by 172 runs in the first innings with eight wickets in hand after bowling J & K out for 330 earlier in the day. Opener VA Jagadessh made 69 before being run out. Batting on 67, Rohan Prem had taken the team to 158 for two at stumps with Sachin baby. Earlier after resuming on 247 for seven, the hosts lost their remaining three batsmen for the addition of 83 runs. Saurashtra vs Tripura: Asked to follow on, Tripura were trailing by 193 runs with seven wickets in hand at stumps. The visitors were 11 for three with Abhijit Dey and MB Murasingh in the middle. Earlier, after resuming on 270 for six, were all out for 307. Ravindra Jadeja then claimed six foor 27 while Kamlesh Makvana picked three to skittle Tripura out for 103 in the first innings. In their second innings Jaydev Unadkat then removed Subhrajit Ray while the left-arm spinner accounted for Arindam Das and Rakesh Solanki to leave Tripura reeling on nine for three. Services vs Jharkhand: Services need 72 runs to win and were five without loss at stumps. Earlier after resuming their innings on 131 for nine Services were bowled out for 161 in the first innings with a 116-run lead. Pathania who had claimed six wickets in the first innings then returned to claim seven for 64 to bowl Jharkhand out or 192 in the second innings. Chasing 77 runs on their home ground, Anshul Gupta and Soumik Chatterjee have begun the hosts reply.
