TN, Saurashtra, Services canter to outright wins
On Day 3 of the first round of Ranji Trophy 2015-16, Saurashtra were bowled to an innings and 118-run win by Ravindra Jadeja (11 wickets in the match) in Rajkot. In Chennai, Tamil Nadu beat Baroda by seven runs while Services coasted to a nine-wicket win over Jharkhand at the Palam Ground. Here are the highlights for the day: Group A Assam vs Karnataka: Karnataka resumed their second innings on 77 without loss on the third morning and declared on 394 for eight later in the day. While the middle-order made useful contributions, opener, R Samarth scored 131 to help set the opposition a 388-run target. Chasing the total, Assam were 30 for one at stumps with Pallav Kumar Das on 21. Play was called off for the day when J Suchith trapped Sibsankar Roy for eight. Assam need 358 runs to win with nine wickets in hand with a day remaining.
Maharashtra vs Haryana: At 256 for three, Maharashtra were trailing by 79 runs in the first innings with seven wickets in hand at stumps. Opener Swapnil Gugale made 91 before being sent back by Ashish Hooda. The bowler had earlier claimed Harshad Khadiwale as well. When play ended for the day, Kedar Jadhav was batting on 39 with Ankit Bawne on 33. Team Rajasthan vs Delhi: Putting up a better display in their second innings Delhi scored a massive 437 before declaring their innings and setting the hosts a 336-run target. Chasing the stiff target in Jaipur, Rajasthan were 20 for one at stumps and need 316 runs on the final day with nine wickets in hand. Vineet Saxena and Ankit Lamba were at the crease when play ended for the day. Earlier, after resuming on 176 for one, Delhi lost their middle-order to the Nathu Singh-led attack. The bowler began the day with the wicket of Pradeep Sangwan and ran through the line-up to finish with seven for 87. However, Sumit Narwal's unbeaten 106 lower down the order lifted the visitors to a respectable total. Vidarbha vs Odisha: Following on Odisha were trailing by 178 runs with all wickets in tact at stumps.
Earlier after resuming on 79 for two the Odisha line-up caved in to the Vidarbha attack leaving Govind Podder stranded on 148. Akshay Wakhare picked four while Ravikumar Thakur took three and Ravi Jangid claimed two wickets. At the end of day's play, Girja Rout was batting on 13 with Natraj Behera on one as Odisha finished the day on 15 without loss. Group B Andhra Pradesh vs Mumbai: Mumbai were trailing by 86 runs in the first innings with five wickets in hand after wrapping-up Andhra's first innings for 244. The visitors lost captain Aditya Tare to Ayyappa Bandaru with just six runs on the board and were soon left reeling on 61 for four by the hosts. Nikhil Patil and Siddhesh Lad then stabilised the innings and had taken the team to 158 until the former was sent back. At stumps Mumbai were 158 for five with Lad batting on 63 and Abhishek Nayar yet to open his account.
Earlier, Andhra lost their remaining six wickets for 31 runs after resuming their innings on 213 for four. Balwinder Sandhu claimed five for 53 while Shardul Thakur picked three to help bowl the hosts out. Punjab vs Railways: Following on, Railways were trailing by 283 runs with five wickets in hand in the second innings at stumps. The Brainder Sran-led Punjab attack bowled the visitors out for 196 in the first innings to put the hosts in the driver's seat. The bowler claimed six for 61 while Siddarth Kaul picked four for 53. Varun Khanna then picked all the five wickets that were to fall in the second innings until the end of day's play. Arindam Gosh was batting on 21 with Karn Sharma on eight when play ended for the day in Mohali. Tamil Nadu vs Baroda: Tamil Nadu pulled off a seven-run win in a low scoring game in Chennai. With a target of 122 to attain, Baroda resumed their second innings on four without loss on the penultimate day. The Rahil Shah-led TN attack ran through the visitors lineup to bowl the team to victory. Shah picked five for 44 while Malolan Rangrajan and DT Chandrasekar picked three and two wickets respectively to bundle Baroda out for 115. The hosts picked six points from the outright win.
Uttar Pradesh vs Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh were trailing by 452 runs in the first innings with seven wickets in hand at stumps in reply to UP's 686 for seven declared in the first innings. Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh declared their innings after adding 30 runs to their overnight total. MP then lost JalahSaxena with just 12 runs on board. Ankit Rajpoot, who bowled the opener, also sent back Udit Birla 65 runs later. Aditya Shrivastava continued to anchor the innings and found an able ally in Naman Ojha. The pair had put together 157 runs for the third wicket until Kuldeep Yadav claimed the wicketkeeper batsman signaling stumps. When play ended for the day, the opener was batting on 99 with the team on 234 for three. Group C Goa vs Hyderabad: Having secured a 24-run first innings lead, Goa were 349 for five at stumps with Sagun Kamat (81*) and Saurabh Bandekar (5*) in the middle. The hosts resumed their innings on 47 for one in the morning and plodded their way to forward with the batting line-up making substantial contributions. J & K vs Kerala: Kerala were leading by 155 runs in the first innings with two wickets in hand at stumps. After resuming on 158 for two, they were powered to a first innings lead by Sachin Baby. The batsman made 151 before returning to the dressing room late in the day. At the end of day's play, Kerala were 485 for eight with Ahamed Farzeen (17*) and MD Nidheesh (11*) in the middle.
Saurashtra vs Tripura: Saurashtra kicked off their 2015-16 season with a thumping innings and 118-run win over Tripura to collect seven points from the Group C encounter.
Following on, Tripura resumed their second innings on 11 for three on Saturday morning and were bowled out for a paltry 86. Ravindra Jadeja, who had claimed six in the first innings, picked five for 45 while Dharmendrasinh Jadeja took four for 12 to bowl the hosts to victory in Rajkot. Services vs Jharkhand: With a nine-wicket against Jharkhand, Services opened their account in the points table with six points. Chasing a 77-run target, the hosts resumed on the third morning at five without loss. Rahul Shukla sent back skipper Soumik Chatterjee to end the opening stand for 59. Anshul Gupta then took the team across to the target with Ravi Chauhan.
