Punjab canter to a massive win against Railways

Punjab were the only team to post a win on the final day of the first round of the Ranji Trophy 2015-16. Barinder Singh Sran claimed six wickets in the first innings to help enforce a follow on on Railways while Varun Khanna claimed eight in the second innings to bowl the hosts to victory. Here are the highlights for the day: Group A Assam vs Karnataka: Hosts Assam opened their account in the points table with three points while defending champions Karnataka were handed one in the drawn match. Chasing 388 in their own backyard, the home team resumed their second innings on 30 for one and were 259 for five when the match ended in a draw. Captain, KB Arun Karthik was unbeaten on 115 when play was called off. Maharashtra vs Haryana: Maharashtra earned three points on the basis of their first innings lead against Haryana while the visitors received one. Powered by Ankit Bawane's 172 and Chirag Khurana's unbeaten 136, the home team were 570 for six in the first innings in response to Haryana's 335 all out. Team Rajasthan vs Delhi: Rajasthan collected three points on the basis of first innings lead while Delhi picked one from the drawn encounter in Jaipur. Chasing 336, Rajasthan resumed their innings on 20 for one and were 186 for three when the match was called off. Vidarbha vs Odisha: Vidarbha picked three points on the basis of their first innings lead while Odisha were granted one in the drawn game in Nagpur. Following on, Odisha resumed their second innings on 15 without loss on the final day of the game and were they had stayed afloat on the fourth day until the match was called off. The visitors were 230 for six when play ended. Group B Andhra Pradesh vs Mumbai: Andhra bowled Mumbai out for 237 in the first innings earlier in the day to seize a first innings lead. While scripting a reply to the hosts 244-run first innings total, the visitors had resumed their innings on 158 for five with Siddhesh Lad and Abhishek Nayar in the middle. Bandaru Ayappa ran through the visitors’ line-up to help his team gain three points from the match. When play was called off Andhra were 138 for two. Punjab vs Railways: Following on Railways were bowled out for 282 after resuming on 125 for five on the fourth morning by hosts Punjab in Mohali. Varun Khanna claimed eight for 97 in the innings to bowl Punjab to a thumping win. The innings and 126-run win earned Punjab seven points in their season opener. Tamil Nadu vs Baroda: Tamil Nadu picked six points from their outright win against Baroda. Uttar Pradesh vs Madhya Pradesh: UP and MP both were awarded a point each as the latter hadn't finished their first innings when the match was called off in a draw. MP were 531 for seven in reply to UP's 686 for seven declared. Group C Goa vs Hyderabad: Goa gained three points on the first innings lead while Hyderabad received one from the drawn match in Goa. After resuming on 349 for five, the hosts were 425 for seven in the first innings in reply to the visitors 325 for nine when play was called off. J & K vs Kerala: Kerala received three points from the drawn match against J & K on the basis of their first innings lead while the hosts were granted one. After declaring their first innings on 485 for eight with a first innings lead, Kerala bowled J & K out for 225 in the second innings. Raiphi Gomez and Rohan Prem claimed three wickets each to bowl the home team out a second time. Chasing 77 runs, the visitors were 44 for four when the match was called off. Saurashtra vs Tripura: Saurashtra kicked off their 2015-16 season with a thumping innings and 118-run win over Tripura to collect seven points from the Group C encounter. Services vs Jharkhand: With a nine-wicket against Jharkhand, Services opened their account in the points table with six points.
