Summary

Saurashtra canter to thumping victory

The second day of the second round of Ranji Trophy 2015-16 witnessed two double centuries. While Kerala’s Rohan Prem scored 208 against Hyderabad and Mumbai’s Shreyas Iyer made 200 against Punjab. Ishant Sharma claimed a six-wicket haul against Vidarbha in Delhi. Saurashtra were the only team to post a win on Friday. They beat Jharkhand by eight wickets to claim six points from the match. Ravindra Jadeja claimed seven wickets in the second innings to help set-up the win. The spinner finished 13 wickets in the match. Here are the highlights for the day:

Group A

Assam vs Team Rajasthan: Assam were leading by 26 runs in the first innings with six wickets in hand at the end of day's play. KB Arun Karthik (60*) and Trajinder Singh (24*) had taken the team to 212 for four until stumps. Earlier after Rajasthan resumed their innings on 147 for five, Krishan Das wrapped-up the hosts innings for 186. He finished with five for 32 in the innings.

Delhi vs Vidarbha: 132 for two at stumps, Delhi were trailing by 166 runs in the first innings with eight wickets in hand. Gautam Gambhir was batting on 62 with Nitish Rana on 57 when play ended for the day. Earlier after resuming on 222 for six, Vidarbha were bowled out for 298. Pace spearhead, Ishant finished with six for 36 in the innings. Karnataka v Bengal: Karun Nair (119*) powered Karnataka to a first innings lead against Bengal in the Group A encounter. Earlier Bengal lost their last wicket in the morning without adding to their overnight total of 312. The hosts then lost Robin Uthappa with just nine runs on the board and were 60 for two after losing R Samarth a while later and S Bhavane retired hurt. However, Manish Pandey (50) followed by Nair and Shreyas Gopal's (54*) efforts helped the team to 322 for four until stumps.

Odisha vs Maharashtra: At 176 for four, Odisha were trailing by 114 runs in the first innings in reply to Maharashtra's first innings total of 281 runs. Govind Podder was batting on 78 with Pratik Das on 32 when play ended for the day. Earlier, after resuming on 231 for five, Mahrashtra lost their remaining half of the line-up for 50 runs.

Group B

Andhra vs Gujarat: Andhra were trailing by 112 runs in the first innings with nine wickets in hand at the end of day's play against Gujarat. KS Bharat was batting on 119 with M Kaif on 44 at stumps. Earlier, after resuming on 250 for five, Gujarat were bowled out for 308 as CV Stephan claimed three while B Ayyappa and Siva Kumar picked a wicket each on the second day to bowl the opposition out. Baroda vs Railways: Having amassed 448 for six in their first innings until stumps on Day 2, Baroda were leading by 282 runs when play ended for the day. While Anureet Singh claimed four wickets, Deepak Hooda's 122 propelled Baroda to a massive total after resuming on 118 for one in the morning. At close of play Hardik Pandya was batting on 41 with Swapnil Singh yet to open his account.

Madhya Pradesh vs Tamil Nadu: After resuming on 225 for five on the second day, Tamil Nadu were 517 for seven at stumps. The visitors lost only two wickets during the day as they piled on runs in Indore. Overnight batsman R Prasanna was sent back by Udit Birla earlier in the day while J Kousik, who had resumed his innings on 14 went on to score 154 before being sent back by Puneet Datey. At close of play, Malolan Rangarajan was batting on 124 with Aswin Crist on eight.

Mumbai vs Punjab: Mumbai continued to dominate on the second day of the ongoing match against Punjab and were leading by 341 runs in the first innings with four wickets in hand courtesy Iyer’s maiden double-century. After their pacers bundled the visitors out for 154 on the first day, the Mumbai batsmen ensured that their team stayed in charge at the Wankhede Stadium. Propelled by Iyer’s 175-ball 200 and Surya Kumar Yadav’s patient 78 off 162 the hosts were 495 for six at stumps on Day 2. At close of play, Aditya Tare (111*) was batting with Dhawal Kulkarni on 30*. Group C Goa vs Services: Goa were trailing by 340 runs in the first innings with eight wickets in hand at stumps. Swapnil Asnodkar (25*) was batting with Dheeraj Jadhav (12*) when play ended for the day.

Earlier, after resuming on 230 for three were bowled out for 403. Rajat Paliwal missed out on his century by seven runs while Sufiyan Alam made 63. RR Singh and Shadab Jakati claimed three wickets each while Saurabh Bandekar picked two wickets.

Himachal Pradesh vs Jammu & Kashmir: 300 for five at stumps, Himachal Pradesh had seized a marginal seven-run lead before end of day's play. After bowling the opposition out for 293, NR Gangta's unbeaten 111 helped the hosts past J&K's total after being left on 77 for four. He was batting with Rishi Dhawan (40*) when play ended for the day. Earlier, J&K were lost their last two wickets for 19 runs after resuming on 274 for eight in the morning. Hyderabad vs Kerala: Hyderabad were trailing by 361 runs in the first innings with nine wickets in hand at stumps in reply to Kerala's 401. Akshath Reddy and GH Vihari were batting on 17 and 13 respectively when play ended for the day. After resuming on 186 for five Rohan Prem's double-century along with useful contributions from lower down the order helped the team to a good first innings score. The top-order bat, who resumed his innings on 106 runs in the morning, went on to make 208 before being sent back by Akash Bhandari. Saurashtra vs Jharkhand: Ravindra Jadeja claimed seven for 55 while K Makvana picked three for 34 to bowl Jharkhand out for 122 in the second innings. The hosts then chased down the 86-run target in 28.5 overs. Sagar Jogiyani made 46 while Cheteshwar Pujara was unbeaten on 23 as Saurasthra coasted to victory.
