Mumbai, Nov 10: Rajasthan skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar scored a fluent century after winning the toss and opting to bat first against Mumbai here at the CCI.

The hosts got an important breakthrough early on when Akash Chopra (19 runs) was adjudged leg before wicket off Murtuza Hussain in the 13th over. But that wicket brought in another senior player, Kanitkar, who guided the visitors to 309 for the loss of four wickets when stumps were called on Day 1.

Kanitkar, who posted an unbeaten 129 with 17 boundaries, was involved in a 77-run stand with Vineet Saxena and later a 137-run partnership with Rashmi Ranjan Parida.

Opener Saxena (53) returned to the pavilion soon after he completed his half-century as a Dhawal Kulkarni clipped his bails. Ashok Menaria, who then came to the crease, was involved in a 61-run partnership with Kanitkar before Suryakunar Yadav sent him back for 32.

Menaria was replaced by Parida in the middle who, with his skipper, made the Mumbai bowlers toil on a difficult wicket. Mumbai used as many as nine bowlers in an effort to get a breakthrough. Finally, the new ball was taken with three overs left and Kulkarni brought back to the attack. Kulkarni trapped Parida (67 runs) lbw to end Mumbai’s day on a high.
