Pandey, Tiwary hit centuries on Day 1
Mumbai, Nov 17: Manish Pandey’s century helped Karnataka post 316 for the loss of five wickets on Day 1 against Mumbai after winning the toss and opting to bat at the Brabourne Stadium. At stumps Amit Verma was batting on 44 alongside skipper R Vinay Kumar on 21.
Opening the innings for the visitors, KB Pawan departed in the eighth over without opening his account. Pawan, who had scored a double ton in the first match, faced 24 balls during his stay at the crease and was out edging Dhawal Kulkarni to Rohit Sharma in the slips. Ganesh Satish, who joined Robin Uthappa, got off the mark in the 13th over.
Although his partners found it difficult to score off the Mumbai bowlers, Uthappa scored prolifically at the other end. Unfortunately for Karnataka, Uthappa departed for 49 runs (off 53 balls, 10X4). Diving to his left, Mumbai wicketkeeper Onkar Gurav pulled off a brilliant catch off Abhishek Nayar to send back the dangerous batsman.
Manish Pandey, who replaced Uthappa in the middle, continued to bat in the same vein. While Pandey dominated the Mumbai bowling, Ganesh held up the other end with a rather sedate innings. When the partnership crossed the 100-run mark, Pandey was on 77 while Ganesh was on 34. The duo brought up the 200 for Karnataka after lunch and Pandey reached his 100 (off 111 balls) on the next ball. An over later, the stylish right-handed batsman retired hurt for 101 with the team score on 202 in 53.3 overs. He hit one six and 13 boundaries during his 114-ball stay at the crease.
Dropped by Mumbai skipper Wasim Jaffer off Kulkarni while on 15, Ganesh scored 83 (off 181, 10X4) before Ankeet Chavan sent him back soon after tea. Iqbal Abdulla then trapped CM Gautam (11) and Stuart Binny (2) lbw off consecutive overs to give the hosts two quick wickets.
With Ajinkya Rahane released from the national team to play the Ranji Trophy and Ajit Agarkar fit to play, Mumbai also brought in Ankeet Chavan and left out Kaustubh Pawar, Murtuza Hussain and Kshemal Waingankar while Karnataka retained their squad from the previous game.

Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary (136*) and opener Arindam Das (105) struck centuries to help their side post an imposing 318 for three against Madhya Pradesh. Tiwary and Das were also involved in a 209-run stand for the third wicket. While Das got out shortly after reaching his century, Tiwary remained unbeaten at the end of the day’s play with former India captain, Sourav Ganguly (37*), giving Tiwary company.
