Pandey, Verma put K’taka on top; double ton for Tiwary
Mumbai, Nov 18: Day 2 of the Elite Ranji Trophy encounter between Mumbai and Karnataka saw the batsmen plunder runs while the bowlers continued to toil hard at the Brabourne Stadium. Manish Pandey cracked an unbeaten double century while Amit Verma scored 173 as Karnataka declared their first innings for 635 runs.
At stumps, Mumbai were 37 for the loss of one wicket with Ajinkya Rahane (23*) and Abhishek Nayar (14*) at the crease.
Building on the overnight score of 44, Amit Verma was unfortunate to miss out on a double century after facing 275 balls. The first session yielded 108 runs as Verma and Vinay Kumar milked the Mumbai bowlers with the former hitting a six each off Iqbal Abdulla and Ramesh Powar. Powar picked the only Karnataka wicket that fell in the morning session when he bowled Vinay Kumar for 57.
The Karnataka skipper was replaced by Manish Pandey who had retired hurt on Day 1 after posting a century. Pandey, in the company of Verma, continued to pile on the runs for the visitors. Rohit Sharma too was brought in to bowl a few overs after lunch in an effort to break the partnership. But it was once again Powar who claimed Verma to break the 157-run stand and give the hosts a breakthrough.
Abhimanyu Mithun, who replaced Verma with the visitors on 544 for the loss of seven wickets, launched into the Mumbai attack. Mithun added to the misery of Mumbai bowlers as he slammed sixes and fours around the ground until he was dismissed by Ankeet Chavan for 45. He hit three massive sixes off Powar and one off Chavan during his 37-ball cameo which took Karnataka to the 600-run mark before tea. With 189 runs coming off the second session, the visitors were 613 for the loss of eight wickets at tea.
After tea Chavan struck again to send back new batsman Sreenath Arvind for a duck. With nine batsmen back in the pavilion, and Pandey needing 20 runs to complete his double ton, it was up to KP Appanna to hold up the other end. The spinner faced 12 balls without scoring a run and kept Pandey company. Once Pandey reached the 200-run mark (off 250, 23X4, 1X6), Karnataka declared their innings.
Chasing a mammoth total, Mumbai lost skipper and opener Wasim Jaffer in the first over with just three runs on the board as Vinay Kumar had him out lbw. Despite having a strong batting line-up, the hosts have a huge task ahead of them with two days left in the game.
