Summary

Amit Mishra, Umesh Yadav tip balance in visitors’ favour

Australia A were 288/7 at the end of first day's play in the second four-day match against India A being played at the Allan Border Field. Umesh Yadav and Amit Mishra took seven wickets between them to leave the match evenly poised at stumps. When the play ended Ben Cutting and Cameron Boyce were batting on 23 and 19 respectively. Australia A lost three wickets in the opening session after Faulkner won the toss and elected to bat, and it was up to he and Forrest to steady the ship, which they did so in the middle session without losing a wicket. The hosts were 3-66 at lunch, with Phil Hughes (12) and Alex Doolan (18) both losing their wickets to India A speedster Umesh Yadav, before Chris Lynn (12) departed just prior to the interval, edging off the leg spin of Amit Mishra. Peter Forrest and Chris Lynn then laboured on to add 26 runs to the total until Mishra dismissed the latter. The middle-order batsman edged the leg-spinner to walk back for 12. Forrest then formed a valuable alliance with James Faulkner to stabilise Australia A’s innings. The No 3 batsman was involved in a 133-run partnership en route to his 77 before being sent back by Yadav. Forrest nicked the pacer to the wicketkeeper ending a carefully complied knock. With the team on 197 for four, Mitchell Marsh joined Faulkner in the middle to build on the innings. Faulkner clobbered Mishra for four sixes in an over as he collected 26 runs from it. He heaved the first over mid-wicket and then slammed the next over long on followed with two more - over mid-wicket and square-leg. However, five over later, six runs short of the three-figure mark, Faulkner was caught by Ojha off the leg-spinner. Marsh was Mishra’s next wicket as the lower-order batsman offered the catch to Robin Uthappa in the slips. Cutting then joined Sam Whiteman in the middle towards the fag end of the day’s play. But, the Indians struck again to claim one more Australia A batsman. Mishra got the better of the Whiteman to collect his fourth wicket of the day. Cutting and Boyce then saw the home team through the remaining overs of the day. Brief scores: Day 1: Aus A 1st inn 288/7 in 90 overs (J Faulkner 94, P Forrest 77, A Mishra 4/114, U Yadav 3/42)
