Debutant Mustafizur bowls hosts to win with a fifer
India lost the first game of the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh by 79 runs in Mirpur. Chasing the 308-run target, the MS Dhoni-led side were bowled out for 228. While Rohit Sharma (63) strove to keep India on course for the chase, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed dismantled the India line-up. Debutant Mustafizur’s maiden five-wicket haul kept India in check as he helped the hosts to a 1-0 lead in the series after the batsmen set-up the match in Bangladesh’s favour. The 102-run opening stand between Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar set the foundation for a formidable total for Bangladesh batting first, while Shakib Al Hasan (52) ensured they capitalised on the platform. The late onslaught by Mashrafe Mortaza helped the hosts post their highest score against India. Their bowling attack then kept the India line-up on a tight leash even as Rohit and later Suresh Raina looked to chase down the total. Chasing the stiff target the India openers were tested by Taskin and Mustafizur. After a circumspect start to the innings, Rohit broke the shackles by slamming Mustafizur over square-leg for six as he collected 15 runs off the seventh over. While Rohit ensured a steady flow of runs from one end, Shikhar Dhawan had survived a couple of tough chances as the wicketkeeper couldn’t hold on to the nicks. Rohit impressed with his drives and easy hits to the fence as he kept India in the fray but, with the team on 95 the visitors lost their first wicket. Dhawan departed edging a short ball from Taskin to Mushfiqur Rahim who didn’t miss a third time. And in the pacer’s next, Virat Kohli nicked him to the wicketkeeper and left India on 101 for two. The Bangladesh seamers bowled a disciplined line that had kept the Indian batsmen under pressure. But four runs and over three overs later, Rohit became Mustafizur’s maiden ODI wicket after being brought back into the attack. The opener departed hitting the ball to mid-off for 63. And the left-arm pacer accounted for Ajinkya Rahane with the slower delivery in his next. India were reduced to 115 for four from 95 without loss and with pressure creeping in, Dhoni joined forces with Raina to scale the target. But, 13 runs later, India’s ODI captain departed nicking Shakib to the Rahim. Raina then embarked on the uphill task of reviving the innings with Ravindra Jadeja. With singles the pair kept the scoreboard ticking. With the required run-rate climbing up, Raina took on the spinners; hit Shakib over long-on for six and Nasir Hossain for boundary in the next. Jadeja got India’s batting powerplay off to a good start with a couple of boundaries off Rubel Hossain. But brought back into the attack, Mustafizur wrecked Raina’s stumps with an off-cutter after being hit for a six and was on a hat-trick with the wicket of Ravichandran Ashwin. He had the lower-order batsman nick the ball to the wicketkeeper to pick his fourth wicket and accounted for Jadeja in his next to complete a five-wicket haul. However, he wasn’t able to hold on to a return catch sent his way by Mohit Sharma. The lower-order swung their bats around but the target was by then out of India’s reach. Later, Rahim took a single-handed diving catch, his fifth catch behind the wickets to send back Mohit off Mortaza. Shakib then wrapped-up the Indian innings with the wicket of Umesh Yadav with 24 balls to spare. Earlier, after a few quiet overs upfront the Bangladesh openers unleashed themselves on the Indian bowlers. It was Tamim Iqbal’s onslaught that changed the pace of the innings. He clobbered Yadav for 18 runs in the sixth over including a six. Sarkar followed up with couple of boundaries off Bhuvneshwar Kumar over mid-on and mid-wicket in the next. With an upper-cut off Mohit, Sarkar reached his fifty off just 38 balls en route to the team’s hundred which came in 13.1 overs. The pair looked unstoppable until a direct hit from Raina found Sarkar short of his crease after being sent back by his partner while looking to pick an improbable single. Continuing to carry the innings forward, Iqbal dismissed Mohit's no ball over long-off to reach his fifty. However, rain interrupted play later in the over. When play resumed after an hour long break, Ashwin dealt vital blows to edge India back in the game. In the third over after resumption, Iqbal mishit the off-spinner straight to long-off and departed for 60. In his next, Ashwin had Litton Das out lbw. He then followed up with the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim, who perished hitting the bowler to long-on with the team on 146. Ashwin was well complimented by Raina, who tied the batsmen down from the other end. Although he didn’t get a wicket, the left-arm spinner conceded only four runs an over and helped keep the flow of runs in check. Pegged back by the spin duo, Shakib rebuilt the innings with Sabbir Rahman in an 83-run stand. The pair maintained a steady flow of runs as they pulled, swept and lofted the pacers to the fence. Ravindra Jadeja couldn’t hold on to the tough chance off his own bowling that would have given India the wicket of Shakib in the first over of the batting powerplay. But an over later he knocked back Rahman’s off-stump. Nasir, who then came to bat, clobbered Jadeja for a six over long-off and a boundary to pick 13 off the over. As runs flowed freely for the home team, Dhoni gave Kohli a couple of overs as India looked to curb the batsmen. However, the much needed breakthrough was given by Yadav. Shakib struck a slower delivery from the pacer to Jadeja at backward point. In the bowler’s next, a brilliant catch by Jadeja running backwards gave India Nasir’s wicket. Bhuvneshwar then claimed Rubel Hossain and accounted Taskin in his next. But Mortaza took his team past the 300-run mark with a couple of boundaries off Mohit in the last over before perishing taking the aerial route which resulted in the team being bowled out with two balls to spare. Man of the Match: Debutant left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman for his maiden five-wicket haul that helped Bangladesh to victory.
