Report: Bangladesh vs India, 3rd ODI
Summary

Dhawan, Dhoni-led batting effort sets-up win for India

With a 77-run win in the last game of the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in Mirpur, India finish the tour with a win under their belt. Asked to bat, Shikhar Dhawan held the India innings together with a watchfully crafted 75 in the first half while MS Dhoni (69) batted diligently in the later part to help India to a formidable total. The ODI captain was ably supported by Ambati Rayudu in a 93-run stand that kept India on course while cameos by Suresh Raina and the lower order helped India set Bangladesh a 318-run target. Dhawal Kulkarni then claimed both the hosts’ openers and with pressure of keeping up with the run-rate to scale the mountainous total, Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 240. Raina returned to pitch in with the ball and finished with three for 45. Earlier, after a subdued start to the innings, Rohit Sharma looked in good nick as the openers negotiated the Bangladesh bowlers. He struck Mashrafe Mortaza over cover for four to collect the first boundary of the innings. While Mustafizur Rahman tested the batsmen with his accuracy and variations, the batsmen saw him through patiently. While Rohit scored freely in the initial stages to get a run-a-ball 29, Dhawan had stood stoically as they looked to get India off to a solid start. However, Mustafizur forced an edge from Rohit through to the wicket-keeper to leave India on 39 for one. Virat Kohli then joined Dhawan in the effort maintain a healthy run-rate. Timing the ball well, the pair built a partnership with ones and twos. The opener survived on 40 as the wicket-keeper missed a tough chance and couple of overs later, reached his half-century with a boundary to square-leg off Arafat Sunny. As the partnership began to take shape, Mortaza turned to Shakib Al Hasan to provide the side with a breakthrough. And the spinner responded with the crucial wicket of Kohli. Looking to sweep, Kohli found his bails dislodged, ending the stand for 75. Dhoni who then came to the crease, hit Nasir Hossain for a boundary and followed up by lofting the next ball over mid-wicket for six after a couple of quiet overs. The pair had added a quick 44 runs until a brilliant catch by Nasir at short mid-wicket off Mortaza to send Dhawan back to the pavilion. The hosts’ captain, who had brought himself into the attack while the batsmen enjoyed the upper-hand had struck a crucial blow. Although boundaries were few, the batsmen kept the scoreboard moving with ones and twos to keep India in the reckoning for a decent total. In the 33rd over after India took batting powerplay, Rayudu swept Sunny on the leg side for four as they took eight runs of the first over. An over later, Mortaza handed the ball to his go to man, Mustafizur, who then kept the batsmen on a tight leash with Shakib. While they had taken India past the 200-run mark, Dhoni and Rayudu managed to watchfully collect only 28 runs off the five crucial overs. Looking to up the ante Dhoni slammed Rubel Hossain over extra cover for four as he approached his half-century and got to the mark with a single off Sunny in the next. A bit later, Rayudu survived as Sunny failed to hold on to the return catch after the batsman had hit the ball in front. Both batsmen had taken India to 251 in a 93-run stand when Rayudu was removed for 44. Suresh Raina then drove Mortaza past extra cover to the boundary and lofted Rubel for six in the next as India looked to increase the run-rate. But Dhoni perished hitting Mortaza towards deep mid-wicket. The left-hand batsman then led the charge against the Bangladesh bowlers and took his chances as he took India past the 300-run mark with Stuart Binny. Although he had picked a couple of boundaries off Mustafizur to collect 12 runs from him, Raina was bowled in the pacer’s next. In the process the bowler equalled Harris’ record of 13 wickets in a three-match ODI series. Axar Patel and Binny then added 16 to take India to 317 for six. Binny then opened the bowling with Kulkarni and bowled a tight first over in which he missed a chance to catch Soumya Sarkar off his own bowling. But India got their first breakthrough in the next. After being smashed over point, Kulkarni had Tamim Iqbal leg-before wicket. Sarkar continued to attack the Indian bowlers, especially hitting Binny on either side of the wicket. His blitzkrieg was ended by Kulkarni. The pacer pitched up a slower delivery and the opener departed mis-hitting the ball high in the air and was caught by Ashwin at mid-on. Mushfiqur Rahim then joined Litton Das in scaling the target and the duo stitched a 50-run partnership until Raina ended the blossoming stand. The part-time spinner had Rahim edge the ball through to the wicket-keeper leaving the hosts on 112 for three. Six runs later, Axar Patel castled Das to tip the balance in India’s favour. After adding 30 for the fifth wicket with Sabbir Rahman at a quick pace, Shakib departed taking the aerial route off Raina while looking to increase the run-rate. Earlier in the over, Sabbir was fortunate that the ball had landed safely after having top-edged it while attempting a big hit. In their effort keep up with the required run-rate Nasir and Sabbir then continued to take on the visitors to keep their team in the fray. Sabbir, who had unleashed a steady onslaught on the Indian bowlers was done in by a slower one from Binny after hitting the medium-pacer for back-to-back boundaries. Although he had brought the required run-rate below seven run per over, his departure for 43 put the pressure back on the home team. In Binny’s next over, Dhawan grassed a chance to send back Mortaza who had mis-cued the ball to the point. However, in the next over, Ashwin bowled the Bangladesh captain for naught. The spinner also accounted for Nasir to bring India sniffing distance of a win. Four overs later Rubel then holed out to long-on giving Raina his third wicket. Rayudu claimed Mustafizur to wrap-up the match. Man of the Match: Suresh Raina for his match-winning all round performance (three wickets and scored 38 off 26) Man of the Series: Mustafizur Rahman for his record 13 wickets in the three-match ODI series on debut.
