Mandhana fifty puts India in advantageous position

Chasing 181, India women were 62 runs short of the target at stumps on the penultimate day of the ongoing Test match at Wormsley against the England Women. When play ended on Friday evening, the visitors were 119/4 with Mithali Raj batting on 20 and Shikha Pandey yet to open her account. Chasing the competitive target, Thirush Kamini and Smriti Mandhana got India off to a good start with a 76-run opening partnership. Kate Cross who dismissed Kamini lbw to end the stand, sent back Mandhana six runs later for 51. With the match tipped in India’s favour, Poonam Raut joined Mithali Raj in the middle. The pair took India past the 100-run mark before Heather Knight claimed the wicket of Raut. Three runs later, Harmanpreet Kaur was dismissed for a duck by Cross. With the visitors on 115 for four, Pandey joined her captain in the middle and saw the team through to the end of day’s play. Earlier, resuming on 110/6, Sarah Taylor and Jenny Gunn added 13 runs in the morning before Taylor was bowled by S Sharma for 40. Gunn, who had claimed five wickets earlier, returned to anchor the innings scoring an unbeaten 62 to take the hosts to 202 in the second innings and keep England in the game. She built a 58-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Anya Shrubsole until Jhulan Goswami struck. The tall Indian pacer trapped Shrubsole lbw and later claimed Sonia Odedra. Shikha Pandey then had Cross hand a catch to the wicketkeeper to wrap-up the innings.
