Jammu and Kashmir bundle out Mumbai for 236

Jammu and Kashmir shocked Mumbai by bundling them out for a modest total of 236 in the first innings on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Group A game here today. Further tightening the grip, the visitors reached 88 for one at stumps to take away the opening day's honours. Opener Shubham Khajuria (47) and Bandeep Singh (34) were at the crease. Pacer Ram Dayal and left-arm spinner Waseem Raza picked three wickets each to wrap-up the Suryakumar Yadav-led side in two sessions for 61 overs despite the Mumbai captain’s half-century and a late onslaught by Dhawal Kulkarni. Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir bowlers dominated the first session of the first day after losing the toss. The visitors had claimed both the Mumbai openers in the first hour of the day after the hosts elected to bat. While Samiullah Beigh conceded runs in his opening spell, Dayal and Umar Nazir, who came in as first change kept the batsmen on their toes. Bravish Shetty, who had plucked runs of Beigh was the first to be sent back Dayal. The bowler caught the debutant opener off his own bowling and gave the first blow. In the following over Bandeep Singh at second slip took a superb catch diving to his right to remove Almeida off Nazir. Aditya Tare joined Wasim Jaffer at 59/2 and the pair had taken the team to 88 until the latter was castled. Beigh bowling his second spell uprooted the experienced campaigner’s off-stump to give his team a crucial breakthrough. Mumbai’s woes continued as 12 runs later, Tare hit Dayal straight to mid-wicket and departed for 23. With Abhishek Nayar and Yadav at the crease Mumbai were 112/4 at lunch. The J&K bowlers continued to ask questions of the Mumbai batsmen and created another breakthrough in the fifth over after lunch. Dayal induced an edge off Nayar while Obaid Haroon took a regulation catch behind the wicket to leave Mumbai reeling on 134/5. Next, it was Shreyas Iyer’s turn to return to the pavilion after nicking Raza to the wicketkeeper. The Mumbai captain then brought up his half-century with a boundary off 47 balls; but after adding seven more to this tally, Yadav found his bails dislodged by Raza. For J&K, Adil Reshi who opened the innings with Shubham Khajuria departed in the fourth over of the last session. Caught at fine leg by Kulkarni off Thakur, the opener was back in the dressing room with just six runs on the board. The fielder however dropped Bandeep who replaced him in the middle later in the over before opening he could open his account. But, thereafter Khajuria and Bandeep played patiently as they took the innings forward. Biding their time at the crease the pair took the team through to the end of day’s play. Scorecard
