Rawat claims fifer; Saxena, Ojha lead MP’s reply

MP were trailing by 183 runs at stumps on Day 2 after bowling Mumbai out for 404 earlier in the morning. Yogesh Rawat claimed five of the six hosts’ wickets that fell in the morning to wrap up Mumbai’s first innings for the addition of 29 runs to their overnight score. Jalaj Saxena then led the visitors’ reply and anchored the innings with 85 before returning in the last session of the day. At the end of day’s play, MP were 221/3 with Naman Ojha (60*) and Devendra Bundela (42*) at the crease in Mumbai. Facing Mumbai’s sizeable total, the visitors lost Sanjay Mishra to an unfortunate run out with 28 runs on board. Javed Khan got his hand to Saxena’s straight drive and the ball crashed into the non-striker’s stumps and the opener was found short of his crease. Saxena and Rameez Khan, both batsmen who had received a life each during the session took MP to lunch at 47/1. After resuming his innings on 30, Saxena brought up his half-century early in the second session. And a little later, Rameez who had received a reprieve on one poked at a Wilkin Mota delivery and was caught by the wicketkeeper for 18. With the partnership ending for 54, Naman Ojha took guard opposite Saxena. The wicketkeeper bat held his ground and ably supported the opener in taking the team past the three-figure mark later in the session. In search of a wicket, Suryakumar Yadav introduced spin in the form of Iqbal Abdullah into the attack later in the session and also gave Akhil Herwadkar an over before Tea in the effort. But, the Saxena-Ojha duo stood their ground and took MP to Tea at 117/2. Mumbai eventually ended Saxena’s resistance in the fifth over of the final session. Iqbal Abdullah sent back the opener who was earlier let off on 17 at gully by Sarfaraz Khan off Javed Khan. The opener was caught at leg-slip by the same fielder to end the third wicket partnership before it could take shape. With his team on 130/3, MP captain Devendra Bundela joined Ojha in keeping the Mumbai bowlers at bat. The hosts attack continued to peg away diligently while the opposition batsmen kept the scoreboard moving and built another partnership. Batting steadily the pair took the team to 200. Ojha, who had diligently held up one end, soon reached his fifty towards the fag end of the day. Negotiating the Mumbai attack, Ojha and Bundela took the team to stumps with an unbroken 91-run partnership. Earlier, Mumbai succumbed to Rawat in the morning and were not able to capitalise on their first day’s hard work. In the fourth over of the first session the hosts lost Khan, Siddhesh Lad and Shardul Thakur to the bowler. Khan edged the ball to the slips where Devendra Bundela took a low catch to send him back while Lad was trapped leg-before. And on the next ball, Thakur edged to the second slip to return for a duck. Although Rawat missed out on a hat-trick the bowler claimed Mota a little over seven overs later while Puneet Datey bowled Abdullah in the next. And Rawat brought curtains down on Mumbai’s innings with the wicket of Kshemal Waingankar and returned with a five-wicket haul.
