SK Patel takes Gujarat to title win
Gujarat pulled off a two-wicket win over Punjab in a closely fought encounter in Bhubneshwar to lift the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2014-15. Chasing 118, opener SK Patel took his team across the line with a ball to spare in the cliffhanger. In a match dominated by the bowlers, the Gujarat opener anchored the innings with an unbeaten half-century even as he lost partners at regular intervals to help attain the target. Earlier, after Gujarat opted to field, Rohit Dahiya (four for 15) and JB Karia ran through the Punjab line-up restricting them to 117 for nine. Dahiya ended the opening stand for 23 with the wicket of Jaskaran Sohi in the fifth over while CT Gaja sent back Mandeep Singh for a duck two runs later. Karia followed up with the wickets of Anmolpreet Singh and Gurkeerat Mann to leave Punjab on 56 for four in the 11th over; 20 runs later he ran out Ravi Inder Singh for 30. Dahiya then ran through the lower middle-order accounting for Himanshu Chawla, Taruwar Kohli and Harmeet Singh Bansal as Punjab scrapped past the three-figure mark. And with Karia running out Siddharth Kaul in the last over leaving the opposition on 109 for nine, Rajwinder Golu helped the team add eight runs off the last four balls. Chasing the modest target, Gujarat lost PK Panchal in the first over to Gill and 14 runs later, Kaul accounted for Manprit Juneja to leave the team on 19 for two. RH Bhatt the joined opener Patel in the middle and the pair added 35 runs for the third wicket until the former was run out by Golu. Castled by Mandeep Singh, Chiraj Gandhi followed him back to the dressing room after adding just one to the tally. Kohli then trapped HR Barad lbw in the next to push the opposition the back-foot. With the loss of three quick wickets, Karia joined Patel who was holding up one end to take the team forward. In an effort to revive the innings the pair added 31 runs until Kohli removed Karia to end the stand. With eight runs required from eight balls, Gaja joined the opener in the middle and the pair overhauled the target to emerge the winners of the domestic twenty20 tournament.
